The show peaked at season 3 because the moment Milo Ventimiglia (Jess) left it lost something special.

I think it was because he was connected to multiple main characters for different reasons:

- Rory's love interest who challenged her

- Luke's nephew and see their bond grow

- clashing with Lorelai and see them tolerate each other
