First Year Struggling with Cases

Hiya~

I am a first year law student struggling with cases. The sentence structures seem unnecessarily complicated and not all judges are as clear in expressing their judgments. The pages and pages of jargon also seem repetitive and I easily get lost in the middle.

Some of my peers only stick with case summaries while my professors believe everyone has to go through the process of actually reading the jargon if we want to succeed.

While I'm skeptical towards only reading case summaries, I am personally very tempted to read case summaries before reading the actual judgments. But I am worried that by doing so I will be taking away the training of identifying key-points in case judgments on my own.

May I ask what senior law students and practitioners usually do when dealing with cases?

Many thanks!!

How to break into quant?

Specifically, as a janitor. I heard citadel pays their janitors very well.

I got an A in a high school toilet cleaning course, and I graduated summa cum laude as a Toilet Cleaning Major at East Dakota State University.

I have 10 years of public toilet cleaning experience.

How is HKU Law perceived in the UK?

To what extent will an LLB from HKU be disadvantageous in the UK due to HKU being a foreign university?

Will a year abroad in a decent UK uni (think LSE, UCL, Durham, King's) be of any help?

Thanks in advance!

US Patent Law -- Prospects for Internationals?

Hello! I am a current student of the University of Hong Kong in a Mathematics & Law double degree program. I'm strongly considering a US career in patent litigation or prosecution.

I do not possess US LPR or citizenship, and will therefore require employer sponsorship.

Upon graduation, I will either pursue a masters in EE/CS or a JD. I am eligible for the NY Bar exam regardless because Hong Kong is a common law jurisdiction.

  • With NY bar membership, would employers prefer a STEM masters or a US JD?
  • What are the prospects like for internationals in US patent law? Will it be manageable to look for visa sponsorship?
  • As a noncitizen, I am ineligible for the USPTO until I start working in patent law. To what extent will that negatively impact my employment prospects?
  • I do not require any visa sponsorship in the UK. Would you advice I instead start my career in a US firm's London office, and then relocate to the US through L-1 only after a few years?

Thanks in advance!

Patent Prosecution/Litigation -- Prospects in the UK?

Hello! I am a current student of the University of Hong Kong in a Mathematics & Law double degree program. I'm strongly considering relocation to London to build a career in patents — specifically patent litigation or patent prosecution.

Upon graduation, I plan to pursue a postgraduate degree in Computer Science, after which I will pursue qualification as an E&W Solicitor, a UK Patent Attorney, and an EU Patent Attorney.

I am eligible for a BNO Visa and so I do not require visa sponsorship of any kind.

I'm trying to get a realistic picture of the field. Would really appreciate any insights from people working in UK IP firms, chambers, or in-house.

  • To what extent is an HKU degree recognized in the UK? Would a year abroad in Durham or UCL be helpful for curing doubts towards my foreign education?
  • What are the current prospects for patent prosecution and litigation in the UK?
  • Which path tends to be stronger long-term? How do salaries compare between the two?
  • What does the career ceiling look like in each?
  • Any other factors or advice I should consider?

Thanks in advance!
