NYC

Upper West Side. Some of the best high-rise density on the planet. Absolutely delightful streets. Happy we are not becoming some ubiquitous city of glass towers.

Long Island City. What happens when NYC lets developers build

In and around Manhattan, developers will build high-density to the max rather quickly, if you allow them to...

Would Sunnyside and Astoria be more expensive if it weren't for LIC's construction boom?

Most new buildings developers build today are unattractive, but better than the ones we were getting decades earlier.

LIC makes the case why the protection of historic areas is important. They would be ruined without a design review board.

City planning should place more emphasis on how buildings meet the street, rather than mostly on height/bulk.

Blank walls, lifeless retail frontages, and prominent loading docks can kill streetlife.

LIC needs more trees. Many saplings have been planted recently though.

There are many more projects to come (a 50-story tower is going up where that red crane is in the distance). Moreso with the passing of the One LIC rezoning.

Serious planning for decking over parts of Sunnyside Yards needs to begin now.

Long Island City, NYC

Long Island City. What happens when NYC lets developers build high density outside Manhattan : thousands of apartments in less than attractive buildings that should do more to engage the street. Downtown Brooklyn and Jersey City seem to be much of the same.
