I live in the UK, had T1D for 16 years. At my last NHS appointment in December the Diabetes & Endocrinology registrar I saw explained to me that I would qualify for an HCL pump. I was quite surprised by this as I’d previously been told you needed an HbA1c of 58 or above to qualify and at the time of this appointment mine was 52. She explained that didn’t matter, and we spent the majority of the appointment discussing the benefits of HCLs, and my reservations about making such a big change. We left the appointment with her saying that she’ll send over more information and it’s all left in my hands. The letter I received following the appointment echoed all of this, saying I could get in touch at any time to be setup for an HCL.
Lately I’ve been experiencing some pretty severe diabetes burnout for the first time, and a lot of anxiety about diabetes, complications and my future. Following a series of events, I finally made the decision that it’s time to make the life change and get an HCL. I called my team’s reception and asked to begin the process. They emailed me back and told me I wouldn’t qualify because of my HbA1c. I’ve now had a letter from the registrar apologising if the post-appointment letter “did not make the criteria for hybrid closed loop therapy clear, and
we discussed that you would need a HbA1c of 58 or above to qualify for this.” We did not discuss this in the appointment - this is a lie.
Does anyone have any advice?
