I got my puppy at 8 weeks, went to establish care at a nearby vet clinic. While there let the vet know I noticed mild scooting behavior. Truly no other GI symptoms. I agreed to the fecal test to be safe, and was positive for cryptosporidium canis. Was prescribed Azithromycin BID x 5d. My puppy completed the course, still no GI issues present, and not scooting. Yay! (Though in my own research I found that Cryptosporidium symptoms are more related to the quality of stool, which remained normal all this time vs anal itching.
We go in for a check up visit 2 days after last dose was given, vet sounds reassured but wants another stool sample. Came back positive again for cryptosporidium canis, now with Eimeria.
I or my wife are always home, the puppy is never alone, and once we see he has pooped, we remove him from the area to avoid the potential of licking or stepping in the fecal matter.
My two questions :
Was it too soon for the repeat fecal test to be negative? Should a repeat have been done a different visit? Clinically he looks great and has no symptoms, not even the scooting. I’m just puzzled at why it came back positive after strict source control and antibiotics
Going back to preventing the licking of fecal matter. I see that Eimeria is a sign of ingestion of fecal matter. Is it possible this was missed from the first fecal exam and now showing up? My guess is he may have ingested while with his littermates before moving in with us, but I would think Eimeria would be positive from the start?
Sorry for the long one, just frustrated thinking I’m doing something wrong here. TIA
I am an incoming general surgery intern at a new-ish community program. Program is set up for residents to do a few rotations at a nearby facility associated with a larger, more established academic gen surg program.
How do I go about making strong connections at this academic program for research opportunities and potential mentorship? Has anyone in this situation seen these faculty members be more “loyal” and “exclusive” with residents of their own program?
Thanks in advance!
