Religious beliefs changed mid relationship
So I am about 5 months removed from this relationship now but felt it would be good to share my story for anyone else struggling with something similar. I [F 29] was in a long term relationship with my ex [M 37] for two and a half years. For the most part we had a good partnership, open communication, understanding of each other’s values/beliefs and enjoyed each other. I had felt like we were consistently progressing our relationship and taking steps to move closer to a goal of becoming married. I started to notice slight changes in his reading material and that majority were religious based. I asked him if he was curious or if he was feeling that this may be a new path for him. He did explain that he was feeling a call to become a Christian and he had been feeling this was for about a year. I was caught off guard but continued to be supportive and happy for him that he found something he felt connected with. I asked why he hadn’t brought anything up to me about this previously and he said he didn’t want to upset me because he knew I wasn’t a religious person. That part hurt my feelings because I had never been judgmental and thought that he knew me better. Shortly after this conversation he called me to let me know he had made the decision to stop having sex and wait until marriage. This is the part that was most difficult for me to understand considering we had an active sex life and this choice had been made with or without me. I had a lot of emotions on this specifically which transpired into us joining couples therapy to try to sort things out. If our relationship could survive. Are we on the same page still? Will I be the right fit for him still because I don’t follow the same religion? It was months of turmoil but eventually I had to make the choice to leave. The person I started dating had changed and that’s ok sometimes couples can grow together and sometimes it’s best to separate. Although there was still love there I started feeling more alone, judged for the person I had always been and like we weren’t a match anymore. My advice to anyone else in this situation is to not feel stuck because of the years put in but to do what is best for both of you. Don’t let days/ months/ years turn into resentment if something doesn’t feel right. It’s ok to let go and move forward.
