Help needed for an AUX error

I'm using Linux Mint on an ASUS TUF F15 laptop.

I have a Zebronics Zeb Thunder headset connected through the 3.5 mm AUX jack.

The problem is that Linux does not detect the headset as a headphone device when I plug it in. The laptop speakers continue to be used.

Interestingly, if I open alsamixer and manually enable the Headphone control, audio starts coming through the Zebronics headset, but it also continues coming through the laptop speakers.

My other headphones/IEMs (Kaztro IEM and Sennheiser) do not have this problem.

Random Kernel Panic ("Fatal exception in interrupt") on ASUS TUF FX506HF across multiple Linux distributions

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose a persistent issue that has followed me across several Linux distributions.

Laptop:

ASUS TUF Gaming F15 FX506HF

Intel Core i5-11400H

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050 (Driver 595.71.05)

Intel UHD Graphics

16 GB RAM

Samsung 512 GB NVMe SSD

MediaTek MT7921 (MT7921E) Wi-Fi

BIOS: FX506HF.312

---

Distributions tested

I've tested the following distributions with fresh installations:

Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon

Fedora 44 KDE

Pop!_OS 24.04

Ubuntu 26.04

The problem appears on every distribution.

---

The issue

The laptop works normally for a while, but if I leave it idle (sometimes after the screen turns off or after it's sitting unused), it eventually freezes and displays:

KERNEL PANIC!

Please reboot your computer.

Fatal exception in interrupt

A hard reboot is required.

Sometimes, before the panic, I also experienced Wi-Fi issues (especially on Fedora):

Wi-Fi disappeared completely.

NetworkManager could no longer see the wireless interface.

Restarting NetworkManager didn't help.

Rebooting temporarily restored Wi-Fi.

Fedora logs previously showed MediaTek MT7921 driver errors such as driver timeouts and chip reset failures.

---

Current system information (Linux Mint)

Kernel: 6.14.0-37-generic

Linux Mint 22.3 Cinnamon

GPU:

NVIDIA RTX 2050

Driver 595.71.05

Wi-Fi:

MediaTek MT7921E

Driver: mt7921e

---

What I've already tried

Fresh installations of multiple distributions

Latest NVIDIA driver

Verified Wi-Fi driver is loading correctly

Different kernels (depending on distro)

Different desktop environments (GNOME, KDE, Cinnamon)

Reinstalling from scratch multiple times

The issue still occurs.

My questions

  1. Has anyone with an ASUS TUF FX506HF experienced similar kernel panics?

  2. Could this be related to the MediaTek MT7921E driver?

  3. Does "Fatal exception in interrupt" usually point toward a driver issue, BIOS/firmware issue, or hardware problem?

  4. Is there anything specific I should enable (persistent journal, netconsole, kdump, etc.) to capture a more useful crash log?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to determine whether this is a Linux driver issue, a BIOS/firmware problem, or failing hardware before I spend more time reinstalling distributions.

Thanks!

SPS Algorithm Engineer

I would like to know about the further opportunities in the field. Currently I'm a Signal Processing Algorithm Design Engineer Intern at a startup company for 7 months. What shall I do after this. How are the job opportunities in the field and also is a years experience good as a starter to hop into other companies.

About what I do, currently I am in a team developing different waveform or SDR. And the task is to implement things, like satellite communication and all using various algorithms in hand
