Carrothulhu

Carrothulhu

...and under the soil was something so alien and ancient that it defied rational description. It's tendril-like roots seemed almost non-euclydian in their geometry, and from the depths of the earth I could here the faint whisperings of those great orange ones as they dreamt in death. For one day they would rise out of the ground and bring the garden under their sway and all who behold the strange nutrition of great Carrothulhu will go mad with the understanding that the garden is theirs no longer, and perhaps never was.

Viral

I'm going to run Viral for my in-person group in October. Any tips on running the scenario? (I've watched Seth's video, by the way, and it looks like the unredeacted version has some of his changes built in.)

For those of you who have run it, how did you approach the comment section and donations? How did you approach the massive Hospital map in-game?

Why The Haunting?

Other than the legacy of being the first scenario ever, why do people like this one? I've run it once and I didn't love it and my players didn't love it like many of the other scenarios I've done. (We've had a blast running Edge of Darkness, Crimson Letters, and more).

What's the hype about and why do I see it recommended to new Keepers so often, even over other freely available scenarios like The Lightless Beacon or The Dead Boarder.

Masks of Nyarlathotep

I want to eventually run this game. I am a fairly experienced keeper, but still feel a bit intimidated by this behemoth of a campaign.

As such, I think I would love to try it out as a player before I run the game, but with the 2 groups I currently run CoC for and a D&D campaign I'm playing in, adding another commitment to my schedule is not plausible.

Is there anyway to experience MoN in a more...I dunno...casual format? Is anyone even running such a thing?

Convention

I've been a Keeper for some time now, and I have been apprached to run some Call of Cthulhu one shots at a local comicon. It's a 2 day affair. On day one I'm running a 3-4 hour session. On day 2 I'm running three 1 hour sessions, for which I'm doing each of the scenarios from Gateways to Terror.

The session on day one is supposed to be a way to introduce the system to potential new keepers, so I was thinking of either doing one of the freely available scenarios (The Haunting, The Lightless Beacon) or one from the starter set (likely Edge of Darkness).

Which do you think I should run? Preferably one that would be easily accessible to newer keepers.

Arkham Horror vs. Call of Cthulhu

I've never played the Arkham Horror board game or card game. Is it worth bothering with or should I just stick to the Call of Cthulhu TTRPG?

Least favorite

Whether you were the Keeper or an Investigator, what was your least favorite Call of Cthulhu scenario or campaign to be a part of? What made the experience sub-par?

Video Game

With Baldur's Gate 3 being the most definitive video game adaptation of Dungeons and Dragons in existence, I would love to see a Call of Cthulhu adaptation with dice rolls and character creation that lends into an investigative horror with the kind of narrative possibilities that BG3 has.

I've played the official Call of Cthulhu game as well as Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, and some of the older point and click adventures, but nothing has really felt like a CoC rpg.

If you could have a CoC game that felt like the best possible adaptation of the TTRPG, what mechanics and elements would you want to see?

Online Campaign

I am running my first online campaign with a group and after the first session, I am worried about immersion. When I play in person, I usually have music, cool props and handouts, etc. I am playing over discord, and while I can send maps/handouts and the like in the chat or directly to players, I find it kind of clunky and I haven't found a good way to introduce music in an efficient and effective manner.

Any tips from online keepers to make the online experience more immersive while still being efficient?

Exploring the Mythos

One of my favorite things about Call of Cthulhu is that all of the monsters and deities are from published stories. Having the Malleus Monstorum has led me to seek out other authors who contributed to the mythos.

I am currently reading The Inhabitant Of The Lake and Other Unwelcome Tenants by Ramsey Campbell and loving it. Two questions for the subreddit:

  1. Has anyone read Campbell's other mythos works, aka The Revelations of Gla'aki or The Three Births of Daoloth trilogy? If so, are they worth hunting down?

  2. Who is your favorite mythos writer outside of H.P. Lovecraft?

Hp Lovecraft Tier List

Haven't read the dream cycle and am probably missing some key works, but these are the ones I had in my Cthulhu Mythos collection plus a few extras. I found reading these extremely helpful in running Call of Cthulhu as a keeper.

Classic Campaigns

While it is certainly simple to convert a classic campaign to 7e, I would love to see more of these campaigns given the 7e treatment a la Masks and HotOE.

Anyone know if there are plans for the OG, Shadow of Yog-Sothoth, or Beyond the Mountains of Madness getting the update?

Would you be interested in a 7e version of these classics?

First Call of Cthulhu Campaign!

I've run a bunch of one shots so far (Haunting, Lightless Beacon, Edge of Darkness, Crak'd and Crook'd Manse, Crimson Letters, and more..) and I was looking forward to a lengthier campaign with my players that wouldn't end with me spending every waking moment trying to manage it. (Looking at you Masks) So I settled on this sucker because I was thinking of homebrewing a Mi-Go based campaign anyways. I have read a lot of advice and criticisms about this module, but what I've read so far is so cool and I am stoked to run this with my group. I will give a full report on my experience when we're done!
