Drills to help with situational awareness when on D (9U rec)

Hi friends! I'm a first time coach and I did not grow up playing baseball so there's a lot of learning on the fly for me.

I volunteered to be HC for my son's 9U rec team. Machine pitch.

We've had 2 games so far. I'm not worried about wins or losses. My goal is to make sure: 1) kids have fun, and 2) kids get better at baseball, being a teammate, learning to make progress, etc.

One thing I've noticed in our first 2 games is a lack of situational awareness when we are in the field. A couple of examples:

  1. We are on D. Bases loaded. Ball is hit to 3B who fields it nicely. Instead of going for the easy out at 3B he throws home to try and prevent the run.

  2. We are on D. Runner on 1st. Ball hit to infielder. They kind of freeze not knowing whether to try and throw to 2nd or throw to 1st.

I'm not surprised there is some of this given how young and inexperienced most of the kids are.

It's my job to help them get better.

Any suggestions on age and skill level appropriate drills to help them get better with decision making?

Help with my son's swin [9U]

Hi friends! My son is in 9u machine pitch (40mph). It's a House League (I think that's the equivalent of rec league in the US).

I took this video last night just before we hit off the tee. So it's his "game time" swing but pretty representative.

Season just started. This is his 3rd year at machine pitch. He's always been a pretty good hitter. Not power but lots of contact.

This year he has struggled at the plate. Either no contact or foul ball contact. He's not upset about it yet... but I know if it goes on for longer he'll start to lose confidence.

I've never played baseball, didn't grow up playing it etc. so I don't really have the skills or experience to help him diagnose.

What are one or two suggestions you have to help him clean up his swing. Feels like there's a lot of "extra motion" this year, compared to previous years, but I don't know what to fix.

Looney Tunes as Blue Jays Fans

My wife was helping her mom clean out her basement and she found this gem of a sweatshirt tucked away in a box.

She said it was hers and got it just after the Jays won in '92.

Going to give it a wash and give it to our daughter!
