Transphobia at Canberra Airport

Sorry in advance about the vent post but the behaviour of the security staff at Canberra Airport is flat-out unacceptable.

I’m on a day trip to Canberra for work and I’ve never experienced this before at an Australian airport, and frankly I expected better of Canberra.

The density scanner for whatever reason flagged my shin as having something there, that shouldn’t have been and the male security staff unable to determine my gender asked and I said female. He then misgenders me and says to the female staff “he needs to pat down and prefers female.”
The female security worker then refused to pat me down and told me to walk through the metal detector which then pinged for an unknown reason. She still refuses to pat me down and insists I have something in my pockets when I don’t. I then get sent through the density scanner a second time and it comes out clean.

This behaviour is blatant transphobia, was humiliating, and was completely unacceptable.

I’ve always found Canberra to be a very accepting city whenever I’ve visited but Canberra Airport really needs to do better.

Rant over.

I’m one of the TWU’s National Food Delivery Delegates. We’ve been fighting for the Minimum Standards Order case at the Fair Work Commission. Ask me anything about gig work rights in Australia. 14/06/26 @ 11am AEST

I’m Alexi, TWU National Food Delivery Delegate. I’ve been driving gig delivery (DoorDash, UberEats, Menulog) for many years, and I’ve represented food delivery workers through the Minimum Standards Order proceedings, including as a witness before the Fair Work Commission.

Ask me anything about the FWC Ruling, the MSO, or the word that the TWU is doing!

Drop your questions below now — I’ll be answering live tomorrow (14/07/26) at 11am Sydney time (AEST).
