Fluorescent Jacket
I recently started a new job working a swing shift, so beautiful perfect riding weather before work, but getting off at midnight. I usually never ride at night if I can avoid it because my eyes don't work well in the dark due to having LASIK ten years ago; reduced ability to see at night is a common side effect of the surgery. I'm not here to complain about that, because I would do it again in a heartbeat as that surgery was one of the best decisions of my life. Even normal eyes have ~85% reduction in function at night, so it just seems like a no-brainer not to ride at night if it can be avoided. However, if I didn't ride to work, I wouldn't get to ride much at all now, so I guess I'm riding at night. But I digress.
I am working security and needed a jacket for patrols after the sun goes down. I looked in the back room and found a pile of old jackets, some were black with fluorescent gray strips and others were this horrible highlighter yellow. Naturally, I yanked one of the yellow ones because I'm not out here trying to sneak up on anyone since I am a tiny woman. I got hired because I am a woman and they needed women in the security office at this facility to help with the female students. Whatever, I actually really like the job.
Anyway, after work one night, I wanted to take this jacket home to wash it, so I wore it over my gear. Lemme tell ya, it does the trick! I feel a lot better about riding at night when I'm wearing it. It is my personal responsibility to make sure I'm safe on the road, but being a literal beacon of obnoxious yellow and silver doesn't hurt one bit. Cars are giving me a TON of space when I wear this jacket over my gear, even during the day. My bike doesn't have storage, so stowing the jacket doesn't work, I have to wear it or it doesn't come with me.
Even though it isn't technically motorcycle gear, it is literally just a windbreaker, I think this is the best "gear" I've added to my rotation in a minute. I always thought those guys who wore the fluorescent vests and jackets were a bit doofy, but now I get it. It might look doofy, but boy howdy, it makes me as visible as the sun! Highly recommend.
