On Day 25 of Pride: Let‘s take a look towards the Addams Family and why they have been considered Icons for the LGBT-Community for decades 🏳️‍🌈

One of the reasons The Addams Family has remained so beloved across generations is that they have always felt like outsiders who refuse to apologize for who they are. Long before mainstream LGBTQ+ representation became common, the Addamses embodied themes that resonated deeply with queer audiences, long before Wednesday:

They are a family that looks different, acts different, and has interests that society considers strange, abnormal and even frightening. The people around them constantly judge them, misunderstand them, and assume the worst about them, spreading nasty rumors or even physically attacking them. Yet, the Addamses never try to become "normal." They don't seek approval. They don't hide who they are. They simply exist as themselves.

That's a story a lot of queer people recognize.

Gomez and Morticia are also notable for being one of the healthiest and most openly affectionate couples in popular culture. Their passionate devotion to each other challenged traditional TV norms (back in the 60s, they were already portrayed as equals, something AG & MM must have forgotten). They celebrated a kind of love that was unapologetic, expressive, and unconcerned with social expectations.

The family's entire worldview is essentially: "We're different, and that's wonderful." Instead of treating difference as something tragic or shameful, The Addams Family presents it as a source of joy, community, and strength. It’s what makes them Addamses, and they have a huge community of likeminded people. The real problem is never their weirdness, it‘s society's intolerance. Just because they look or even act different doesn’t make them any less of a healthy and loving family.

Over the decades, queer fans, writers, and critics have embraced the Addamses as Queer Icons because they represent chosen identity, nonconformity, and resistance to pressure from the mainstream. Whether it's the original cartoons, the 1960s sitcom, or the 1990s films, that core message remains the same.

They celebrate the idea that being different isn't something to overcome but rather something to cherish. 🏳️‍🌈

The Addams Family were teaching acceptance and self-expression decades before most media caught up.

Day 17 of Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈 Vada kissing Quinton - From a Queer Perspective

For today's Pride Month post, I wanted to dive back into "The Fallout" and look at it through a queer lens. Specifically, I want to talk about the scene where Vada kisses Quinton, because I feel like a lot of people completely misinterpret it and use it to dismiss Vada and Mia's connection.

If you actually analyze what Vada is going through at that point in the movie, it’s honestly one of the most painfully realistic and human moments in her entire arc. She talks so much about being completely numb after the shooting (she admits it directly to her dad, "I can't fucking feel anything" and also hints at it when she stoned with Mia for the first time, "I feel nothing"), so kissing Quinton is really just a desperate attempt to shock her system. She is literally just trying to feel anything at all to prove to herself that she isn't completely hollow and dead inside, and she's using him to try to force some kind of physical or emotional reaction out of herself. It is clear that the night she had spent with Mia had archived that, and that is why she is rushing to try to replicate that feeling.

Tracking this from a queer perspective, there is a much deeper layer of emotional calibration happening here after having sex with Mia. The kiss with Quinton acts as a literal baseline test for her. After experiencing that genuine, unexpected spark with a girl, Vada is spiraling and trying to figure out if what she felt was something real or if it was just a temporary fluke born out of shared trauma and some substances in their system. She’s essentially testing her own body's wiring to see if Quinton, whom she also shares said trauma with and who also became a great friend to her, triggers that same emotional response, or if that connection and experience of feelings after such a long time of numbness was uniquely tied to Mia. It is a panic reaction.

There is definitely a tiny, subtle hint of comphet mixed into her trauma response here too. Like a small part of her probably hopes she can replicate that feeling with Quinton just because it would be "safer" or easier to navigate when her world is already totally upended. She saw Mia as a friend, and is now scared of losing that special connection they have. Vada admitting to her mom that she "kinda thought" she would have sex with Quinton rather than Mia also shows this underlying comphet, sadly most queer women experience, especially as teenagers.

I just love The Fallout! It’s just such a messy, honest look at a teenager trying to navigate her sexuality (even when it's just one aspect of the movie) and calibrate her emotions while dealing with PTSD.

What do you guys think? Did you interpret the Quinton scene this way too, or did you see it another way?
