I've been reading about the history of Rapa Nui (Easter island), and a particular point of contention seems to be the use of Mata'a spears. It appears that they don't have sharpened points, which would make them terrible throwing or stabbing weapons. My question is, is it possible that they were not spears at all, but a type of long axe? So instead of using them as throwing or stabbing weapons, the people of Rapa Nui used them as two handed weapons that slashed and chopped?
