One further point that strengthens this reading:
Job’s intercession for his friends connects back to his intercession for his children at the beginning of the book.
That earlier intercession was not rewarded.
Even so, Job still intercedes with God for the very friends who had condemned him as guilty.
At this point, the Accuser’s proposition that devotion ultimately depends on self-interest is decisively brought to an end.
