As the title says, I’m currently a university student, and I’m looking for a way to cover some of my financial needs alongside my studies.

I have a good background in graphic design and some experience with typesetting.

I’ve chosen to focus more on typesetting because I feel that it’s something I’m genuinely good at and enjoy doing.

My goal would be around $300–$500 per month at most.

Do you think this is a realistic goal for a student doing freelance typesetting? And if so, what would you recommend I focus on when starting out?

Any advice or personal experience would be really appreciated.

شغال كفريلانسر وجربت فترة شغل المنصات (تحديدا أبوورك) ولكن بقيت حاسس أنه عبء أكتر منه أي حاجة تانية.

بحاول دلوقتي أركز على السوشيال ميديا، بحاول أركز على النشر والتفاعل وكدا بس دايما بحس أن وجود شبكة العلاقات بيجيب شغل أكتر من أي حاجة، وأنا كواحد ملوش علاقات تقريبا في المجال اللي شغال فيه (شغال جرافيك ديزاينر وحاليا بتخصص في مجال الـ DTP) إزاي أقدر أعمل علاقات بعد كدا تحسبلي فرص شغل؟

والمفروض أعمل علاقات مع مين بالضبط؟ أنا عارف أن في مجالي الـ project managers هم اللي غالبا ممكن يشغلوا فريلانسر معاهم، بس فعليا مش عارف إزاي أقدر أتواصل معاهم وأعرفهم ويعرفوني وهكذا..

جربت قبل كدا الـ Cold outreach بس غالبا الناس بتعامله على انه spam ومحدش بيرد.

حد عنده فكرة أو تجربة يفيدني؟

بحاول بقالي سنتين كفريلانسر في تصميم الجرافيك تحديدا تصميم المطبوعات والمواد التسويقية (مش متاح ليا إني أشتغل في شركة)، هدفي كان ٢٥٠ إلى ٣٥٠ دولار في الشهر أو حدود كدا، لكن مفيش نتيجة خالص، خدتلي كام شغلانة، ورغم إن العملاء كلهم تقريبا كانوا مبسوطين من شغلي لكن الشغل مش مستقر خالص ممكن أقعد ٧ شهور مثلا من غير شغل أو بشغل قليل جدا.

اشتغلت على أبوورك ومعظم شغلي منه، وحاولت أظهر واتفاعل على لينكد ان وإكس، اتواصلت مع مسؤولين في شركات سواء ايميل او غيره مفيش رد نهائيا.

الدخل استقر تقريبا حدود ٤ شهور وبعد كدا الوضع بقى متدهور جدا، حاولت أعمل كل ما هو متاح ولكن وصلت لحائط مسدود، جربت كل النصائح بتاعت أتخصص في نيش معين وطور البورتفوليو بتاعك وأظهر قدام أصحاب الأعمال والكلام دا كله ولا زال الوضع كما هو عليه.

عارف ان التنافس شديد جدا ولكن أعتقد إني مش طالب رقم كبير أوي. ما العمل؟

I've been freelancing as a graphic designer for about two years, mostly doing layout and print design; brochures, company profiles, catalogs, reports, etc.

I've been struggling to find consistent work, so lately I've been thinking about moving more toward DTP and localization, especially Arabic/English work.

Basically, I want to work on adapting designs from one language to another, especially between Arabic and English. This could be anything from a catalog, book, or company profile to a more creative design. The idea is to adapt the layout and structure to the new language, rather than simply replacing the text and leaving the original design unchanged.

I already have experience with InDesign and layout design, and I'm very comfortable with Arabic typography, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and RTL formatting.

For anyone who actually works in DTP/localization, does this sound like a sensible move?

Is there actually decent freelance work in this field?

Where do you usually find this kind of work?

And how much has AI affected this type of work?

I'd really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who work in this field or have made a similar transition.
