In NorCal, can I start seeds next week?

First time. Zone 9b. I have a spot that gets roughly 12 hours of sun/day during the growing season and automatic irrigation setup to water daily. 50/50 sand/compost mix with good organic fertilizer mixed into the soil. Would want to smart with a dwarf auto flower, but I'm flexible and can up pot later.

No rain, I do however get fog rolling in in the morning/evening so moisture is issue.

Given we're past the solstice on this side of the world, wondering if it's even worth it? I have a few seeds from a bag I got a few years ago. Interested to throw it in a 10 gallon pot and just try it out for funsies.

Onn 4K Pro vs TCL QM6K Pro built-in Google TV

Am I better off using the Onn 4K Pro box, or just the TV’s built-in Google TV app for Stremio on my TCL QM6K Pro?

Mainly wondering about real-world stuff like smoothness, buffering, crashes/stability, Dolby Vision/HDR, etc.

My gut says the Onn might be the better dedicated streaming device, but curious what others here would do?

Meyer Lemon Transplant Shock

I got this potted Meyer Lemon tree from Costco about 2 years ago. I planted in a sunny spot in a 30 gallon fabric pot in the first year...and it really struggled. Likely due to the fabric pot. It did put out about 5-10 lemons the first year. This winter (January) I decided to put it in a spot that gets about 3-4 hours of direct sun, and filtered afternoon sun.

When I moved it to a new location it dropped most of its vegetative growth, and started yellowing despite amended soil, fertilizer and consistent irrigation.

I imagine it's this is because the citrus wants more heat/sun? I'm probably not going to move it again during the growing season given it's already stressed out.

Recently it started flowering again?! So it's likely going to put out another flush of vegetative growth?
Any recommendations to help it survive in what’s likely its new forever home?

Nectarine – JUST breaking dormancy?!

I bought a Panamint nectarine from Costco as a bare root in January. I moved it to a more sunny spot in March since it wasn’t showing signs of breaking dormancy as the weather was warming up here in Zone 9b (NorCal).

It’s mid June now and it’s JUST started showing signs of breaking dormancy with buds opening and leaves shooting out.

This is my first nectarine from bare root and I’m curious if I should just try to let it grow or if it’s too late in the season and it won’t establish further before it gets cold in October and November?

Did I overpay for these persimmons?

I've been looking to have persimmons in my backyard orchard for the last 6 months, but they sell out *really* fast.

I went to Planting Justice here in the SF Bay Area and they had a Giant Fuyu and a Jiro Fuyu Persimmon.

Giant Fuyu: Dave Wilson Nursery. 3-4 feet tall. 3/8inch caliper on the trunk. Decent looking graft?
Jiro Fuyu: Planting Justice Nursery. Super small 18-inches tall. 1/8 inch caliper (twig)? Pretty rough graft?

They were $52...each?! Did I overpay for these!? Should I try to return them? The Dave Wilson plant just looks like a whip that was just established from bare root a few months ago., which I'm fine with. The Planting Justice one looks pretty rough and I'm not sure it's going to make it.

I did look at other local nurseries and they are selling similar varietes in a 7-gal nursery container for about $100.

(See pictures of the little trees and graft unions)

Where to rest before Narita flight?

Our last day in Tokyo is next Monday. We're traveling with a 6yo and our flight out of Narita is at 9:30PM. Our hotel checkout is at 11AM, with the ability to store luggage with them for the day.

I'm thinking about grabbing lunch, walking around Tokyo for a bit then picking up luggage from the hotel around 3-4PM and grab our private transfer to Narita, to arrive sometime around 5-6PM to go through baggage check-in.

I also plan on grabbing a shower. That gives me a few hours to kill and a nap room seems pretty expensive given that my 6yo doesn't nap and will likely just jump around the room.

Is there a quite are where we can just lounge and read books together? Or should I consider getting a nap room for an hour?

Also what's something easy and underrated we should consider doing on our last afternoon?! We're staying in Ueno and we've done most of the local things like the Zoo, Museum, Playground, etc.

Summer Prune or wait until dormancy?

I have a Rich Lady peach tree that I got from Costco a few months ago in Northern California. If you see the image, it's about 6.5ft tall and has some top vertical branches the the top point of the trunk (which is about 5 feet tall).

I want to encourage more lower branching this growing season before pruning the main trunk down around 4-5 feet tall while it's dormant this winter. I'll likely before it break's dormancy next April when our rainy season ends.

Should I summer prune now or wait until dormancy to encourage growth in the shape that I want?

It also has some fruit. The trunk is about 1.5inch in diameter, which makes me think it's about 1-2 years old. Am I good to leave those on given they won't be amazing eating, but should be a rewarding first harvest?

Effectiveness of Whey/Milk as anti-fungal?

I recently added a bunch of stone fruits to my backyard orchard. However, I'm noticing that at least the NectaPlum already has leaf curl. Yes, I've pruned it well.

I've heard that a liquid Copper Fungicide application is an option to fix the issue, so long as you do it during the trees dormancy. Too late here, obviously.

I found this video on using Whey as a way to fight fungal diseases:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEH4Zezeqf4

Can anyone else chime-in on the effectiveness of whey as an anti-fungal? I also like that it has dual use (even if minor) as a foliar fertilizer.

Two in a hole Apricots!?

I recently got two apricot varieties from Costco. One is called Blenheim and the other is called White knockout.

Since I have limited space, I wanted to try doing two in a hole. The trunks are about 18 inches apart and I’ve situated them such that they get optimal sun from the south and west, which is marked on the image.

The tree, which is less vigorous is in the front which gets more morning sun coming from the southeast. The tree with more vigor is still facing south but more on the west side and will get more afternoon sun exposure.

I trimmed all the branches that are pointing to the center and I’m going for an open center with two in a hole to prevent fungal issues. I’ve also slightly slanted them away from each other.

Is there anything else that I should consider before covering with soil?

I’ve amended my native clay soil with 40 to 50% compost. I’ve also dug a hole that’s roughly 1 foot deep in about 3 to 4 feet wide. The trees are also staggered as not to occlude each other from the south facing sun.

Edit: Given I have heavy clay soil, would you recommend I mound up the tree above grade to prevent root rot?

I got a Flamekist Nectarine tree from Costco in Northern California this weekend. I just realized that it seems to require at least 600+ chill hours!

UC Davis has a historical view of my nearest weather station's chill hours. It looks like I get enough to run Flamekist...but it's cutting it close. It seems to be a tasty variety, most closely related to Fantastia?

I couldn't find another variety in store that was as well rated for flavor. I also like that it ripens later in the season so I can enjoy a later harvest window.

Should I return it or put it in the ground?!

This blueberry is on its second season. I’ve added 1-2 tablespoons of elemental sulfur and HollyTone into a 20 gallon container.

The lower growth seems healthy and green. But the old growth on top seems purple and yellow.

It’s on drip irrigation and gets regular water and 6+ hours of sun per day.

What am I doing wrong?
