How are Foreign Exchange Students treated in Japan? Specifically any POC/WOC from United States.

I am a U.S Student looking to be an Exchange Student! I am currently going into my Sophomore Year, and I wanted to be an Exchange Student for my Senior Year. I really wanted to know if it was a good idea to email my local Rotary club beforehand to ask things such as requirements and such. I know it’s a bit early, but I wanted to consider VISA’s and money saving. And if so, what to ask. Please help!
