I spent several years writing my first hard-SF novel — it’s free on August 17

I've been working on this book for a number of years now and I'm at the stage where I can actually share it with people.

I am a first time author and PROJECT FIRST LIGHT is my first hard sci-fi novel.

It all started with a simple question: what if humanity sent a spacecraft out of the Solar System with everything it needed to go on without a human crew?

The year is 2060 and humanity is sending the UES Dawnstar on an autonomous interstellar mission.

Its purpose is simple: to find alien life, preserve scientific knowledge and continue humanity's journey beyond the Solar System.

But the mission eventually takes it to places where the original assumptions don't hold.

Dawnstar comes across the Alpha Centauri system, unknown planetary settings, extreme dangers, and finally the a binary system, where the mission takes on a whole new level of difficulty.

Somewhere along the way, the spacecraft finds something that changes the mission:

alien life surviving.....

I tried to anchor the science throughout the course of the story. I did a lot of research on astronomy, spacecraft engineering, orbital mechanics, astrophysics, astrobiology and current scientific theories while writing it. I also used AI as a tool to challenge my ideas and to see if the scientific concepts I was using were actually defensible, rather than just assuming that something works because it is science fiction.

This is my first novel and I know there are things I can do better. But after years of working on the story, researching the science, and putting it all together, I finally thot it was time to let other people read it.

I wrote my first hard-SF novel over several years — I'm giving it away free on August 17

I've been working on this story for several years, mostly because I couldn't stop thinking about what a serious interstellar exploration mission might actually look like.

I'm a first-time author, and PROJECT FIRST LIGHT is my debut novel.

I spent a lot of time researching spaceflight, orbital mechanics, astrophysics, AI systems, astrobiology and different ideas in physics while developing the story. I also used AI as a research and reasoning tool to challenge my ideas and check whether the science behind a scene made sense. Whenever possible, I wanted the technology in the story to have some connection to real scientific principles rather than simply being “future technology, so it works.”

The story begins in 2060.

Humanity launches the UES Dawnstar, an autonomous spacecraft designed to travel beyond the Solar System without a human crew aboard.

Its mission is simple on paper:

Search for extraterrestrial life.
Preserve scientific knowledge.
Continue humanity's exploration beyond the Solar System.

But the further Dawnstar travels, the less predictable the mission becomes.

It eventually reaches Alpha Centauri and encounters environments that were never part of the original mission assumptions. Later, in the V-88 binary system, the mission encounters a young and violently evolving stellar environment.

And eventually, something much more important than another planet is discovered:

evidence of surviving extraterrestrial life.

The book is basically my attempt to explore what happens when scientific discovery, mission survival, artificial intelligence and the preservation of life begin to conflict with each other.

The past few days I've been asking questions here about spacecraft navigation, molecular clouds, orbital mechanics, young stellar systems, debris hazards, planetary environments.

All those questions actually did serve a purpose.

They are connected to the science fiction novel I have been working on for years.

PROJECT FIRST LIGHT is my first hard sf novel.

The story follows the UES Dawnstar, an autonomous interstellar vessel launched by humanity in 2060.

There is no human crew on board.

The spacecraft must work for decades using autonomous systems, onboard intelligence, scientific models, navigation systems, engineering systems and all the information it can get on the way.

One of the things I was most concerned with in writing was trying to make the technological problems feel like engineering problems, rather than convenient plot devices.

I spent a lot of time studying real astronomy concepts, orbital mechanics, spacecraft engineering, stellar environments, planetary science and astrobiology and then asking myself:

If humanity actually tried something like this what would the spacecraft have to face?

Eventually, this brings the story to the V-88 binary system, where the mission finds an environment far more dangerous than originally expected.

And eventually, it comes across something even more important:

life outside our planet.

This is my first novel and I know there will be things that can be improved, inevitably. That’s actually part of why I’ve enjoyed talking about the science here on Reddit.

Your crew is mining a rare mineral on an alien planet when a metallic storm is detected. What do you do?

Imagine a human exploration crew has landed on an alien planet to extract a rare and extremely valuable mineral.

The landing site is stable, and autonomous mining vehicles are operating several kilometers away from the spacecraft.

Then a remote sensor detects a rapidly approaching storm.

This isn't an ordinary dust storm.

The atmosphere is carrying large amounts of metallic dust, rock fragments and surface debris. Some of the larger fragments could cause serious damage to exposed equipment.

The storm is still several kilometers away, but atmospheric conditions are changing rapidly. Your crew has limited time to react.

You have:

  • a spacecraft capable of leaving the surface,
  • several autonomous mining vehicles away from the landing site,
  • valuable extracted material,
  • limited information about the planet's weather,
  • and no guarantee that the landing site will remain safe.

What should the human crew do first?

Do you:

A) immediately abort mining and recall every vehicle?

B) prioritize getting the crew and spacecraft airborne?

C) try to recover the mining equipment and material before leaving?

D) seek shelter and wait for the storm to pass?

E) do something completely different?

I'm particularly interested in the decision-making hierarchy. When the crew doesn't fully understand an alien environment, how should they balance human safety, spacecraft survival, equipment recovery and the mission objective?

How would you design a spacecraft to survive a young binary star system?

Imagine you're designing a scientific spacecraft for a very young binary star system.

The system is still forming, and the spacecraft has to operate inside a highly unstable environment.

There are three major hazards:

1. Hypervelocity debris

The protoplanetary disk contains large amounts of silicate dust, metallic fragments and planetesimals moving on different trajectories. The spacecraft could face continuous high-velocity impacts rather than a single collision.

2. A constantly changing gravitational environment

Two stars and several forming planets produce a complicated gravitational field. The spacecraft's trajectory cannot simply be calculated once and left unchanged; orbital perturbations continuously alter the predicted path.

3. Violent stellar plasma eruptions

The primary star periodically produces powerful magnetized plasma eruptions. These can interfere with sensors, communications and spacecraft electronics while the spacecraft is operating inside the system.

Assume the spacecraft has advanced propulsion, autonomous systems, shielding and onboard computing, but its resources are still finite.

If you were designing the mission, how would you deal with these three hazards?

Would you prioritize:

  • physical shielding against high-velocity debris,
  • continuous trajectory correction,
  • radiation-hardened electronics,
  • redundant navigation and communications,
  • autonomous repair systems,
  • or simply designing the mission to avoid the most dangerous regions?

I'm particularly interested in the engineering trade-offs. Which of these three hazards would you consider the hardest to survive, and why?

Could a spacecraft use temporary gravitational equilibrium regions as a navigation strategy?

I'm thinking about a hard-SF scenario involving a spacecraft entering a chaotic multi-body planetary system.

Imagine a binary-star system containing several planets with unstable or evolving orbital relationships. The spacecraft cannot simply follow a conventional straight trajectory because the combined gravitational fields produce rapidly changing perturbations.

One possible strategy would be to continuously calculate temporary regions where opposing gravitational influences partially balance each other. The spacecraft could enter one of these transient regions, reduce gravitational stress, then transition to another predicted equilibrium region as the first one collapses.

The interesting part is that these regions wouldn't be stationary. Their positions would continuously change as the planets orbit.

So, from a real orbital-mechanics perspective:

Could a spacecraft realistically exploit short-lived gravitational equilibrium regions in this way to reduce the amount of corrective propulsion required?

And if the system's planets were also strongly magnetized, could the spacecraft then use a planetary magnetic "umbra" as temporary protection from a predicted coronal mass ejection?

I'm particularly interested in where this concept breaks down physically—especially regarding the stability of the equilibrium regions, navigation precision, tidal forces, and the amount of Δv required to transition between them.

One possible approach would be to combine gravitational measurements with radar-based reconstruction of the surrounding volume. But there is another problem: the dust itself can distort or scatter radar returns, making the reconstructed objects uncertain or even misleading.

So I'm curious:

Is MLBB (MOBA Legends 5v5) quietly becoming the best career option for mobile gamers?

Top Indian creators like Total Gaming, Raistar, Gyan Gaming, and many others are now trying ML5v5. It has already hosted a national tournament and even sent an Indian team to EWC.
