QNAP TS-451 Backplane Failure — Looking for Recovery Advice or Spare Unit
Hi all,
Trying to help an elderly age pensioner friend recover data from a failed QNAP TS-451 NAS. Replacing the unit unfortunately isn’t financially possible at the moment, so we’re hoping the community might have ideas or even old hardware available.
After extensive testing with QNAP support, the conclusion is that the TS-451 backplane has failed, but the drives themselves appear to still be functional.
Key findings:
- Original setup was RAID 5 with 4 drives
- HDD1 and HDD2 were not initially detected in bays 1/2
- When moved to bays 3/4 they were detected successfully
- QNAP support believes the NAS backplane has failed
- TS-451 is now End of Life (EOL) and replacement parts are unavailable
Complication:
There appears to be a RAID synchronisation mismatch:
- HDD1/HDD2 last synced: Nov 30 2025 06:24:09
- HDD3/HDD4 last synced: Nov 30 2025 06:26:53
QNAP advised there is no guarantee the RAID can be successfully reassembled even if moved into another compatible NAS.
Drives have not been initialised, rebuilt, reformatted, or written to since failure.
QNAP support advised the recovery path would likely involve:
- locating a compatible second-hand QNAP unit, or
- attempting migration into a newer compatible model such as a TS-462
They also advised that any replacement model must:
- Be listed as “Migration Compatible = Yes”
- Support current firmware versions (5.2.x)

We’ve looked for second-hand TS-451 units locally without success so far.
We can relocate the unit to Melbourne and Sydney (NAS currently in Regional Victoria) and are hoping someone may:
- Have an old compatible QNAP unit sitting unused
- Know of a safe recovery approach
- Suggest a compatible enclosure/model for temporary recovery
- Have experience recovering a degraded QNAP RAID5 with sync mismatch issues
There is data on the array that he would really like to recover.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
