Bionicle is all about politics and I'm here for it
Bionicle is all about politics and I'm here for it:
Mata Nui: the neglectful benevolent leader who creates and enables the evil in society
Teridax and the Makuta: those entrusted with positions of power and then abuse that power
The Shadowed One & the Dark Hunters: toxic corporate culture and leadership
The Great Beings: amoral scientists who create because they can but never stop to ask themselves if they should
The Vortixx and the Nynrah Ghosts: arms manufacturers
The Toa: military officials
The Turaga: political leaders who peddle a false narrative to keep society compliant
The Vahki: law enforcement
Turaga Dume: tyrants who think they're the good guys
The Matoran: ordinary people
The Order of Mata Nui: the deep state
Maybe that's why I've always loved Bionicle and why I decided to become a political scientist.
Credit to Greg Farshtey for hiding all this in a discontinued kids' Lego theme!
Feel free to add your own interpretations!
New display cabinet
Pretty chuffed with the new Ikea Vittsjö display cabinet I just bought. Now have decent space to get more sets :)
Zyglak POV: you're considered "the Great Beings' mistake" but you're: intelligent, amphibious, extremely strong, invulnerable to elemental attacks, and immune to mutagens
Lore Nuggets #5: POV - you're a Toa Metru and a gargantuan green behemoth Rahi having an existential crisis pulls up in Metru Nui
"The answer! Tell me the answer!" - the Tahtorak
"What is he talking about?" - Pouks
Bionicle 21: Dreams of Darkness
Lore Nuggets #3: nobody: Telluris: creats a giant scorpion mech for no other reason than to rain holy hell on everyone
Let's not forget Telluris could have conquered a planet but became so insane after Annona's exploits that he preferred having the world burn.
Sahmad's Tale: "were he a more rational and practical being, he probably would have conquered much of Bara Magna by now with his Skopio XV-1 vehicle" - Sahmad
Lore Nuggets #2: when rocks fell on Taipu's head and he gave no fucks
Continuing the rock theme from the Dalu Lore Nugget I posted a few days ago, this 2nd edition pays tribute to possibly my favourite ever Matoran quote:
"A long time ago, many rocks fell on my head. That did not hurt much. Neither do these Rahi." - Taipu, MNOG
What an absolute unit.
Bionicle lore in a nutshell
Polynesian mythology > cyberpunk Orwellian dystopia > terrestrial battle against gangsters > marine battle against warlords > aerial battle against demons > Dune Mad Max desert anarchy > epic robot kaiju faceoff
Lore Nuggets: that time Dalu smashed a rock wall... with her head
This one always makes me chuckle:
'"I'm sorry to intrude, Toa Vezok," Dalu began. "But I need some advice. You see, I have a terrible temper... Garan says I erupt worse than the volcano. I don't know that I am that bad, although I did get a little irritated last week and smash a rock wall... with my head..."'
