I got tired of laggy maps with too many pins, so I built my own detecting app with marker clustering and UK LiDAR. Would love your feedback!

Hi everyone! I’m a solo developer and a fellow dirtfisher.

I wanted to share a quick video of an Android app I've been building called CoilTrail. I just updated it with a "marker clustering" feature. Basically, if you have hundreds of finds in one field, it groups them up so your map doesn't turn into a laggy mess, and splits them apart as you zoom in.

More importantly for this group, I managed to integrate high-res LiDAR/Hillshade specifically for England. You can use the slider to fade it in and spot old earthworks and pathways right under your pins. The whole thing works 100% offline so you don't need cell service in the field.

I’m still developing and improving it, so I would absolutely love to hear what the UK detecting community thinks!

You can find it on Google Play here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niittyproduction.coiltrail

Just to be fully transparent with the community: the app is free to download and play around with, but the heavy offline maps and UK LiDAR require a Pro subscription (there is a 7-day free trial). As a solo dev, offering high-res data offline means I will quickly hit paid API and server limits as more people use the app. To keep this project sustainable in the long run without stuffing it with annoying ads, I had to put the heavy mapping features behind a subscription. Hope you understand!

I’m a solo developer building an app for detectorists and mudlarks – Here’s a quick look at the latest updates!

Hey everyone! I’ve been working as a solo dev on an app called CoilTrail, which is originally designed for metal detecting, but I realized some of the features are actually perfect for mudlarking too, so I wanted to share it with you.

The app is mainly about mapping and saving your finds, but the newest update added a few things that might help you locate new spots to search:

🗺️ Ancient Shores & Riverbeds (Finland only for now): I just added a new map layer (from GTK) that shows historical beach ridges and dried-up riverbeds. If you combine this with the 3D LiDAR/Hillshade layer (available globally), you can clearly see the ancient water flow directions and old banks right on your phone. It’s a great way to find spots where water used to be!

🔋 Smart Automatic Cache: You don't need to manually download map areas or manage files. The app automatically caches map tiles as you browse them. Simply look through your spots on Wi-Fi at home, and they are automatically available for offline use in the field – saving your battery and mobile data!

📊 Target ID Stats by Detector: If you *do* use a metal detector, you know VDI numbers vary between machines. You can now filter your find statistics by the exact detector you used (Nokta, Garrett, XP, etc.), so the data actually makes sense.

📍 Save your finds: You can log your finds with exact GPS coordinates, photos, and folders to keep track of where you found certain items.

🌍 Now localized: The app is now available in 7 languages: English, German, French, Romanian, Finnish, Spanish, and Polish.

I want to be completely transparent: While the basic app and saving finds is free, the advanced map layers (like the detailed Topo maps, LiDAR, and Geological maps) are behind a Pro subscription. However, there is a 7-day free trial, so you can download it, check out the LiDAR maps for your local area, and see if it helps you find new spots without paying a dime.

I’d love to hear your feedback or if you have any feature requests specifically for mudlarking! The app is available on Android. Happy hunting! ⛏️
