Looking for cheap DIY JBOD / external drive bay suggestions to expand my ThinkCentre M920t
Hey fellow homelabbers,
I'm currently running a Lenovo ThinkCentre M920t that’s pretty much maxed out internally:
- RAM: 48 GB
- Storage: 4 TB SSD pool (RAID 5) + 8 TB HDD for media
- Status: Zero SATA ports and drive bays left inside the chassis.
I have a few spare 3.5" HDDs lying around that I want to bring into the pool, which means it’s time to move to an external HBA / JBOD setup.
I found Commercial JBOD enclosures are expensive.
I’m looking for ideas/recommendations on:
- DIY Drive Racks / Enclosures:
- What’s the easiest and cleanest way to house 4–8 drives externally?
- Has anyone had good success with 3D-printed modular drive cages, modified cheap ATX PC cases?
- Sourcing Parts:
- Where is the most reliable place to source genuine flashed HBA cards and SAS cables at reasonable prices without getting burned by counterfeit or faulty boards?
Would love to see pictures or write-ups of your DIY JBOD setups if you’ve built one. Thanks in advance!
