Slight engine knocking + oil in airbox
Hi everyone,
I’m trying to diagnose an issue on my 1985.5 Porsche 944 2.5 NA and would appreciate some input from people familiar with these engines.
The engine has developed a slight knocking/tapping sound while running, and I also found a noticeable amount of engine oil pooled inside the airbox underneath the air filter. I’ll attach a photo and video.
The oil was changed in 2024, and the car has barely been driven since. The oil was inspected and there were no metal shavings, metallic residue, or any other obvious signs of internal damage.
I’m trying to understand what could be causing these two symptoms, and whether they could be related. I’m not familiar enough with the 944 to know what the most likely failure points are.
What do you guys think is the most likely cause for oil being pushed into the airbox together with this kind of knocking/tapping noise?
