What event seemed completely normal to you at the time but thinking back on it, you realise it was absolutely unusual?

For me it was during COVID. I was still working as construction and maintenance never really stopped. Abseiling down a 52 floor building to replace a broken window and I got stopped by a person on about floor 30 or so. They were able to open their window (which is unusual itself for a high rise building), and asked if I wanted to play a game of chess. We had time to waste, so a few games of chess, cards, and cup of tea later we are finally ready to put the window in.

Was much more exciting than the window install!
