Michigan Libertarian Senate Candidate Faces Criticism From LNC Members Over Policy Views | Independent Political Report

The Libertarian Party of Michigan’s newly nominated candidate for U.S. Senate is attracting criticism from several members of the Libertarian National Committee over policy positions on her website they argue conflict with the national party’s platform.

Lydia Christensen was nominated for U.S. Senate at the Libertarian Party of Michigan’s Candidate Nominating Convention in Troy on June 28, joining a slate that the party has since publicized as including candidates for numerous statewide positions, Congress, state Legislature, and several university boards. Christensen previously presented herself publicly as an independent candidate, including on her campaign website, but has since updated her information with the Federal Election Commission to reflect her as a Libertarian candidate following the convention.

Tucker Carlson Says He Plans to Help Build New Third Party | Independent Political Report

Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson says he plans to help build a new third party, saying in a recent interview that the country needs another political option and that he would support the effort without running as a candidate himself.

Carlson made the comments in an interview published July 1, after publicly breaking with the Republican Party over foreign policy and President Donald Trump’s handling of Iran. Speaking with Columbia Journalism Review, Carlson said the two major parties are in “lockstep solidarity” on what he called the most important questions in politics, specifically war and finance, and that he was too young to simply accept being “ruled by the most unscrupulous people.”

Forward Party Says Supreme Court Ruling on Party Spending Requires Level Playing Field for New Parties | Independent Political Report

The Forward Party is calling on the Federal Election Commission to ensure new political parties can qualify for national party status, saying they need the ability to “fight fire with fire” after a Supreme Court ruling struck down federal limits on coordinated spending between political parties and federal candidates.

In a statement published July 1, the party responded to the Court’s recent decision in National Republican Senatorial Committee v. Federal Election Commission, saying the ruling gives political parties more authority to spend directly on behalf of their candidates. The party asserted that the decision will hurt voters unless independent parties outside the Democratic and Republican organizations are allowed to compete under the same rules.

“Political parties have too much power already. Full stop,” the Forward Party said. “This ruling gives the existing political elite even more ability to coordinate and control the narrative. It is a net negative for the average American voter (who doesn’t have millions of extra dollars to contribute to parties and candidates).”

Sloan loses independent ballot line in NY-24 race; Tenney to face Ellman | Livingston County News

The state Board of Elections has invalidated more than 1,600 signatures collected by independent candidate Todd Sloan on his nominating petitions, ending his bid to challenge Claudia L. Tenney for the 24th Congressional District seat.

The decision means the incumbent Tenney will only be facing Democratic nominee Alissa Ellman in the Nov. 3 general election.

Sloan, an attorney from Auburn, could still challenge the state Board of Election ruling in court.

Constitution Party Launches American Constitutionist Writers Caucus | Independent Political Report

The party introduced the project in its inaugural June 17 article, calling it “a gathering of Constitution Party writers from across the nation.” The project will focus on articles about Constitutionist principles, how they have been misapplied or otherwise ignored, and what party supporters can do to move the country toward a vision consistent with that of the nation’s Founders.

“As with every Republic known to history, America has wandered off the narrow path of limited government and its commitment to securing the rights of the people and the power of the states,” the introduction reads. “It is time for we the people to hold our elected officials and the unelected bureaucracies accountable for their actions against us.”

Libertarian Party of Florida Defends Jacksonville Candidate Facing GOP Challenge | Independent Political Report

The Libertarian Party of Florida is defending Addison Liberty Patrick, calling her its official candidate for an at-large seat on the Jacksonville City Council, after the Republican Executive Committee of Duval County filed a lawsuit seeking to remove her from the upcoming special election ballot.

In an emailed statement sent June 30, the Libertarian Party of Florida Executive Committee defended Patrick, who is seeking the council’s At-Large Group 1 seat, as the “unquestionably qualified Libertarian candidate” in the race, noting she is both a member of the party’s Executive Committee and a former chair of the Duval County Libertarian Party. It further accused the Duval County Republican organization of attempting to limit voter choice through its challenge to her candidacy.

“By suing to remove a qualified Libertarian candidate, the RECDC is sending a clear message. That they, not the voters, are the true arbiters of who gets to appear on the ballot,” the party said. “The establishment seeks to act as a gatekeeper of our Republic, which deprives voters and candidates of their legal rights.”

‘Undo The Top Two’ Crossed Out “All Voters May Vote” | Independent Voter News

Nowhere in the initiative does it grant No Party Preference (NPP) voters the right to participate in primaries. Independent and NPP voters are not even mentioned. Not once.

What the measure does is strike the existing constitutional guarantee that "a voter nominated primary election shall be conducted" and that "all voters may vote at a voter nominated primary election for any candidate."

In its place: "The Legislature shall provide for primary elections for partisan offices."

That is the swap. A guarantee that every voter may vote for any candidate is replaced with a direction to the Legislature to run private partisan primaries. The promise of equal voter access is removed from the Constitution.

"Just trust us" is the only assurance independent voters have to access the primary election—at all.

A New Political Party Could Be Coming to Nebraska; State Democratic Party Officials Call Foul | Independent Political Report

The stated purpose of the Nebraska Working People Party is to provide Nebraska voters with a “political organization dedicated to advancing the interests of working families, middle-class Nebraskans, rural communities, small businesses, farmers, ranchers, and individuals seeking practical solutions to improve economic opportunity, strengthen communities, and promote responsive and accountable government.”

Organizers who want to create a new political party ahead of the November election have a July 15 deadline. The group would need to collect at least “one percent of the total votes cast for Governor at the most recent general election for such office,” according to state law. Which would be around 6,726 signatures.

NH Ballot Law Commission rejects independent's appeal to run for U.S. Senate | New Hampshire Public Radio

The New Hampshire Ballot Law Commission voted Monday to uphold Secretary of State David Scanlan’s decision to block Aaron Day from filing as an independent U.S. Senate candidate, because Day is not registered to vote where he lives.

Day also ran for Senate as an independent in 2016. Back then, Day lived and voted in Bedford. Now, the libertarian activist lives in Nashua, where he hadn’t attempted to register to vote until after filing his campaign. As a result, it was too late for Nashua checklist supervisors to formally add Day to the voter rolls before June 13, when the state’s candidate filing period closed.

The majority opinion, written by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, agreed with the challengers that the coordinated expenditure limits violate the First Amendment.

Justices uphold state law allowing for late-arriving mail-in ballots

Just over four months before the 2026 midterm elections, the Supreme Court on Monday upheld a Mississippi law that allows mail-in ballots to be counted as long as they are postmarked by, and received within five days of, Election Day. By a vote of 5-4, the justices in Watson v. Republican National Committee rejected an argument, made by the political parties and others challenging the law, that federal law requires mail-in ballots to be received by Election Day.

Court allows Trump to fire FTC commissioner and overturns major restraint on presidential power | ScotusBlog

The Supreme Court on Monday gave President Donald Trump sweeping new authority over approximately two dozen multi-member agencies that Congress intended to be independent. By a vote of 6-3, the justices struck down a federal law that bars the president from firing members of the Federal Trade Commission except in cases of “inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office.” That law, a majority of the justices ruled, violates the constitutional separation of powers between the three branches of government. And in reaching that decision, the court overruled its 91-year-old decision in Humphrey’s Executor v. United States, which had upheld the law at the center of the dispute.
