co-signer options
hi, incoming MS1 about to apply for student loans. I’ve never done this before and am still learning so please be kind. I’m going to have to take out a lot of private loans, and one of my worst fears rn is being rejected for them in like my 3rd year or smth, leaving me without a way to pay for school.
I went to a webinar on student loans and one of the pieces of advice they gave was to take out loans at first without a co-signer so that if you end up getting rejected down the line, you can add a co-signer to still get the money (only if your interest rates with and without a co-signer are relatively the same). Unfortunately I do not have a credit history, I am only an authorized user, so I don’t think this would work for me.
My idea is to use one parent, who has a worse credit score (but still good) first, so that if I get rejected down the line I can use my other parent who has a great credit score. Thoughts?
Edit: the first parent is retired, that probably makes a difference.
