How long would you want Charley's next album to be, and what name would you want for it?

I would want his next album to be around 40 minutes, and I would want it to be named Solmatic because it sounds cool ig.

In your opinion, what is Charley's best and worst lyric from Mercurial?

Best to me: "It's not what I'm used to, no it's not who I am"

Worst to me: "Folded and bound like cloth"

Sorting all games on rating

After the MLB game between the White Sox and Red Sox, I saw that the rating was a 9.8, the highest I had ever seen in a MLB game before. Is there a way to sort the games by rating?

Mercurial Ranked on AOTY!

Standard ranking in 2026: #39

Weighted ranking in 2026: #87

Dear people rating on AOTY, this album shouldn't be 100

I was looking at Mercurial on AOTY when I realized that 1/6 of the reviews believed the album should be rated 100.

I just wanted to say, that with all due respect, it's not.

What is a 100? A 100 is an album without a miss. No songs should ever be skipped.

ALL songs, not just some, must be one of the best pieces of music to touch your ears. It must be considered at least legendary status by many in the community, or at least to you.

I personally don't believe that so many people love every song on this album. It definitely has flaws (in my opinion being clothbound), and if it doesn't have flaws, then it definitely isn't perfect.

I also noticed how many people rated it within a day and called it their album of the year. I even saw somebody say that they knew it would be AOTY before it was released. You can't rate an album before you listen to it.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant, but I think it's important to know what a real 100 is. I do think that many people believe that this album is 100 legitimately, but I don't think 1/6 of you think so, especially considering how different this album sounds compared to what we are used to.

A 2734 Word Deep Dive Into Mercurial

1st track: Lakeview Ct

Lakeview Ct is likely a place that Charley grew up when he was very very young. This is obvious with the lines

>Can't grow back teeth,

>Before I could read,

and

>Biting my skin as I'm climbing the tree

This likely means that he is no more than 5 years old.

We then see Charley contradict himself. He wants to go somewhere, yet he tells himself to not leave yet. Then Charley says that he needs to be somebody, but then he says that he wants to be taken back.

He closes out the song by talking about how he went back to Lakeview Court, even though it has been a long time.

2nd track: Breakfast in Bed

My explanation for this song is from a while ago, and I have copied most of the information, but I have also added new information. If you feel like you have seen this before, then that's why.

Breakfast in bed could be about alcoholism or an unhealthy relationship that is starting again.

It all revolved around the line:

>I can't feel my face

which is usually implied by heavy alcohol usage.

The intro ends with the line:

>Falling into-

followed by,

>A dangerous place, we've been here before.

Falling into means falling into the alcoholic trance or the unhealthy relationship, and the dangerous place is the state of mind when somebody is drunk or making stupid decisions when in a relationship.

For the bridge and outro, here is what I think:

The whole bridge seems to be intentionally altered, with lots of sounds that echo and repeat. The line,

>“Yaw fo epyt, yaw fo epyt emoS”

when spelled backwards is “Some type of way, type of way”. The following line,

“I can’t feel my face”,

could imply that Charley is drunk with this person, since alcohol causes people to lose feelings in their body, typically in their face.

The following lines talking about how foolish Charley is for this person shows that their relationship likely isn’t healthy, possibly implying that their whole relationship is fueled by youth and alcohol.

>I'm such a fool for you

is said 8 times as the song goes quiet and finishes.

3rd track: Mercury

At the beginning of this song, the relationship between Charley and this girl is looking very good. Charley sings,

>Say you love me before you fall asleep

But, this can also be understood as an order. Charley then claims that he doesn't

>Want you to shout... want you to bleed

which implies that he cares for this person.

He then starts to explain how he is different from other people. He has stated this in the past as Boywithuke, and he states it once again. He warns,

>Don't go lookin' for love in a dictionary
If what you want is someone who isn't ready to leave

This is the chorus of the song, and it is repeated twice.

Now, thinking back to the first part of this song, where he said two lines, Charley tries to say that

>Half of the things I said, you know I don't mean

He admits that he probably got these problems because of his father. We already know from previous music that his father wasn't a good person for the family, since even Charley's mother had problems because of him.

At the end of the song, Charley finds some disturbing messages in this woman's voicemail. We don't know exactly what is, but it sounds like Charley feels the requirement to stay with this person and listen to her problems.

4th track: While I'm Gone

While I'm Gone is definitely one of the simplest songs in the entire album.

The chorus that is played three times is of Charley trying to convince a woman he likes to stay with him, even though he is going somewhere for a while. He promises her,

>I'll give you back the time I owe you
Double what you would've got
I'll make us breakfast if you want

After that, he wants to be assured that she won't leave him, with the lines,

>Just promise me you won't be moving on

which are repeated a total of 5 times throughout the song.

There is a small portion where he starts to wonder if this woman is going to change, and how he would feel if he doesn't love her anymore even though she stayed for him.

Overall, there isn't much else to this song. There's a reason why I called it simple.

5th track: Avalon

This song is about a childhood experience when Charley was 10 or 11. We know this because he said that it happened about 12 years back, so if this song was made in 2025, it would have been in 2013. Knowing Charley was born in 2002, he must be 10 or 11. He begins the song by talking about how life was back then. There weren't any streaming services at the time, so he had to watch real steel on the television.

>Rented a garage by the pool, no doubt that man was swimming in debt. Never saw him again.

He then talks about a man who had a Corvette, an expensive car. He believes that the man didn't have enough money to buy that car.

The words, "swimming in debt" has two purposes. First, the obvious meaning is the common expression, swimming in debt, meaning you feel overwhelmed by how much money you owe. The particular word, "swimming" references the pool that the man parked his car by. What probably happened to this man was he was suicidal and broke. He got a car he couldn't afford, drove it to a pool, and drowned himself.

He then talks about how he will have to let go of some things he liked on the East Coast, like his former life, the air, the breeze, and the trees.

Finally, in the Post-Chorus, you can hear

>It's not what I'm used to
It's not who I am

This is probably a reference to his past as Boywithuke. His life had changed a lot, and he started to take up a personality of a person that he wasn't.

6th track: 2002

2002 isn't very difficult to decipher at all. It's a song about how his father is as bad person to him, and it talks about other childhood experiences.

7th track: Guilt Trip

In the beginning of this song, Charley wished to be free from the struggles, maybe within his family, but he didn't know what he would turn into.

It seems like this song is about him having a child when he wasn't ready to. You can tell by the lyric

>Food stamps in a minivan
Baby formula at Saint Anne's

Saint Anne's is evidently a church in the area that he grew up.

The second verse is where we can see that Charley is singing about having a kid, and how the partner doesn't want that. He then talks about his childhood a bit more, and how he is trying to please this person.

>Politics, language, put it all beneath please

In the final chorus, he can either be talking to his girlfriend or his actual mother.

>Mama, don't cry
Because if you cry, then I'll cry too

Here, it could mean that he doesn't want his mother to cry because of the things that his dad has done. He could also be talking to the person he loved, who is having a child but never asked for it.

8th track: Reckless

I'd like to start off by saying that the first chord of the song is the exact same chord as Chamber of reflection by Mac Demarco, which I believe is quite interesting.

The whole chorus goes over the relationship cycle between Charley and this woman. At first, the woman tries to change herself since she had something wrong with her. This could probably be an addiction. In the end, she goes back to being who she was. The cycle then repeats night after night.

>Stay for the night, act like you tried
To be someone different
Keeping insistence
Until you fall back into old habits

The two verses go very well together. The first one is about Charley thinking that he and his love are the same, even though it might not seem like it. Unfortunately in the second verse, this has changed a lot. Now,

>Something is different
You're quiet today

The bridge is definitely one of the saddest parts of the entire album. Here, Charley is asking what would happen if he killed himself by jumping off a bridge. He wants to know if the person he loves would do it with him. This is something that is very common in the youth, especially in Korea.

9th track: What's the Rush?

This is the other explanation that I took from one of my previous posts. It was titled, "Analysis of Duality in What's the Rush?" I believe that it is sufficient to analyze the entire song.

First Lyric:

>

This entire introduction to the song serves as a perfect conceptual introduction as well. Here, Charley is trying to navigate the two speeds for a relationship, a fast one, or a slow one, as implied by glass into sand, a slow natural process. The relationship between fast and slow represents the common theme of duality.

Second Lyric:

>

Here the dual theme of black and white is obviously stated, but then it is revealed that Charley can't even see the other side, meaning he can only see either black OR white, but in this lyric, he says and. Overall, there are two cases of duality, within black and white as well as seeing one color instead of both.

Third Lyric:

>

This lyric is a very evident instance. Here, the first line means fame. Fame means that people will talk about you. But, in this case, Charley doesn't want to be talked about. Both of these cases aren't possible.

Fourth (and last) Lyric:

>

Here, the first line is about living, while the next line can either be about isolation or death, which are also polar opposites to one another.

Also, there is a whistling sound that can be heard that sounds a lot like Petrichor (Interlude) from Burnout. I tried to figure out the notes as best as I could.

The notes of the new instrumental: G B C# D

Old instrumental: E G# B D

10th track: Feel This Way

First of all, I would like to point at that the title of this song consists of a lyric from the song Love Lost, where the chorus has the lines,

>I can't remember, oh I can't remember
Why I feel this way

The song begins with Charley reflecting on his past, and a time where he was with a girl who believed that

>Cigarettes weren't really bad for you

Charley keeps thinking about this girl, and how she would

>cry and get upset

which leads Charley into thinking if he was why she was feeling that way, like the title of the song.

He also realizes that he feels empty and lonely without her. He says:

>And it's getting colder, the nights are growing longer...
Am I making you feel this way?

He ends the some by admitting that he is always receiving the short end of the stick, and he wants to know if that is how both people in the relationship feel. This lasts the entire bridge and outro.

>I'm used to falling, I'm used to
falling onto the ground
I'm used to falling, I'm used to
falling all the way down

11th track: Clothbound

Clothbound is a very slow moving song, so it doesn't have a lot of lyrics. The main lyric,

>You probably forgot how it felt

is sung 4 times. After Charley and this other person started to separate, Charley thinks that the person forgot what it was like to be in a relationship with him.

The introduction and the chorus both start with that line, but they diverge on two different routes. On the first instance, he sings of a somewhat playful threat:

>Too see the look in my eyes
To know that I know
Maybe that I'll shut you up

This is definitely more cruel than the second time:

>The weight of your words
Pulling me underground
Back to Earth

Here, it sounds like Charley is unintentionally cruel, but then the woman calms him down. This can prove that this isn't a particularly healthy relationship.

At the end of the song, he reveals that he doesn't want to communicate with this person since the burden is too hard on him. He expressed that he also doesn't want to

>talk about it.

This probably shows that he has too much emotion to the point where he can't handle it.

12th track: Doubt

Doubt begins with an entire verse about how he hates certain things about himself. This includes how he is

>So imperfect, manufactured, sold and broken, made of sand,

and how he has a

>fucking ego

This entire part has a low voice as well. This is because Charley is contradicting himself again. The lower voice could be considered the bad guy. The line,

>All my problems are from problematic people now
Fuck about my fucking ego, I just bought a house

clearly displays this. He starts by blaming others for his own problems, and then he shifts to realizing that his ego is bad for him, since it made him say the previous line.

He follows that up with,

>Now it's empty, vacant like my bedroom
My baby left me a note she said she left me for more legroom

Since he bought a house, there is likely a lot of room in that house for people to live in. He says that his girlfriend left for more legroom, even though she probably shouldn't need any since she is in a house. This is a case of contradiction.

Finally, he says

>How come I feel so empty when I'm full of doubt?

Here, he uses empty and full, two opposites of one another. He feels empty because doubt isn't emotionally filling, and in fact, it can be considered draining.

He finally ends this album with,

>It's not what I'm used to
No, it's not who I am

which has been heard throughout many songs. A perfect way to close out the album.

Overall Theming

Throughout this entire album, the theme of two was almost always present. This came in the form of Charley debating with a lower voice or singing contradictory lyrics. There are also multiple instanced of Charley wanting to become Boywithuke, but realizing that he shouldn't have tried to in the first place.

Of course, there was also a relationship going throughout the album. It seemed like the songs weren't exactly in order, but the relationship did indeed get worse and worse as time went on. It ends with acceptance, ironically in a song titles doubt (like denial in the five stages of grief).

Addiction is also a theme in this album. In Breakfast in Bed and Reckless, it sounds like there are issues with the person who he is dating, which are likely to be an addiction.

Final Note

If you actually did a read-through of this entire thing, thank you. It took me 3 or 4 hours to get this whole thing ready, and I hope it is read by other people in the community who enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing this. Thank you to the people on Genius for uploading the lyrics and leaving annotations, since I couldn't hear some things on my own, and I really didn't want to transcribe every single song.

Also, I realized that somebody else posted one as well yesterday. I started working on this the morning it was out in Australia, so that wasn't intentional. Ideally, this has different ideas so it's not the same thing again.

Reckless vs Chamber of Reflection

I had just finished Guilt Trip, and Spotify went to the next song, and for the first five seconds I genuinely thought that it was playing Chamber of Reflection by Mac DeMarco. Can anybody confirm that I am correct?

Lakeview Ct is a terrible place to live

Not only are you right next to an airport, but you're on the outskirts of Chicago. Imagine all the traffic and noise that you would have to deal with living other there.

What does the new tracklist imply about Mercurial?

After looking at this tracklist, I will be going through many things that I and the community have noticed.

  1. Avalon is a minute long. This means that the TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF music video has the entire song.
  2. Not only is Avalon short, but it is also the transition into 2002. At the end of Avalon, there is the sound of CD player being stopped or something being stopped. There is also somewhat distorted sound playing. After a second long pause, 2002 starts.
  3. The third track, Mercury, is the title track. This means that if we get another music video, then it will likely be for this track.
  4. Either 2002 or Guilt Trip will be a transition. It can either be 2002, since it is very different from the other 3 confirmed tracks, or Guilt Trip since it is the first track on the B side of the vinyl.
  5. The image was taken in Japan. If you look at the poles, you can see the bands wrapped around the bottom, as well as the structuring of the rest of the pole.
  6. Lastly, the font is Apple Garamond. According to som3t8ing, who left a comment, even the font has the word apple in it!

Will Mercurial have a story throughout the album? - My Opinion

Charley has never had a story stretch throughout an entire album, but he could have changed. Here is what I think Mercurial could be about, and then I'll explain if it is likely or not.

If there is a story about his life, 2002 will be one of the first tracks. It speaks about his childhood way more than the other music.

Breakfast in Bed could be directly before or at least close to What's The Rush, but still behind. In Breakfast in Bed, the song highlights how Charley is trying to be in a toxic relationship with somebody or something. If it is indeed somebody, then this person probably rejects him in What's the Rush, with the line:

>Turning me back, so f***ing fast

My thoughts:

I don't think that Mercurial is going to have a story that stretches the album. Of course, the songs looks like real or made up stories about Charley's life. This doesn't really imply that there will be characters that stretch several songs nor theming throughout the album.
