QUESTION ABOUT CHECKING A BOX

QUESTION ABOUT CHECKING A BOX

I am proposing to check in this box at GLA tomorrow for a flight to Malaga. (I will take the carrying strap off before checking the box.)

The box contains a framed painting.

The box is 87cm wide, 71cm tall and 14cm depth.

Weight is 6kg.

Ryanair maximum checked luggage size is 80x120x120cm

Right now I can buy a 10kg bag for £36 but it does refer to a wheelie bag.

The chat bot said that my box exceeds the maximum width, even although it clearly does not; so has to go to special handling and pay an appropriate fee.

I have done this before with a smaller box from PIK to AGP and simply paid for the box online as if it was a bag. At PIK check in I was directed to special cargo where I showed that I had paid for a checked bag and did not have to pay any extra fee.

Question - do I buy a 10kg bag now and present myself and the box at Ryanair check in, expecting to be redirected to special handling; or do not buy anything online and go straight to special handling being prepared to pay an airport handling fee?

I'm not able to speak to Swissport who are Ryanair's handling agents at GLA and cannot get through to a real person at Ryanair CS.

Any advice would be appreciated.
