[Record] West Ham are signing Portugal U21 midfielder Gustavo Sá from Famalicão for €20M (£17M)

Gustavo Sá is leaving Famalicão and will reinforce West Ham next season. The deal will be closed for an amount of around 20 million euros. SAD Minho initially pointed to the bar of €25 million, but the negotiations end up not reaching this level. Still, we are facing Famalicão's largest sale ever.

The 21-year-old international midfielder under-21 thus ends a long connection to Famalicão, which lasted since his time in the under-15s (2018/19). He debuted as a senior player in 2022/23 and has since player 120 games, netting 12 goals and 15 assists.

Tomas Soucek on Instagram

This isn't how I imagined ending the season.
Not with West Ham. Not with the Czech Republic. And certainly not with an injury.

I'm sorry we couldn't give our fans the moments and results you deserved. That hurts me more than anything.

The good thing about football is that there's always another challenge waiting. A new season is almost here, bringing a new opportunity to put things right.

For 12 years as a professional, l've been lucky enough to avoid a serious injury. Now I have to face a challenge I haven't faced before. But everyone who knows me knows one thing.
I never give up!
This injury doesn't change my mindset. If anything, it makes me even more determined. I'll use these next few weeks/months to work, recover and come back stronger.
As a player, as a teammate and as a person.

Since the season ended, I've only had one thing on my mind. West Ham United. This club means so much to me and I'm ready to do everything I can in helping get it back to where it belongs; to the English Premier League.

For the immediate future, I'll support the boys off the pitch whilst I rehabilitate. Then once back, I'll give everything I have on the pitch, fighting alongside the boys once again.
COYI!

As for the international team, I need some time to think about my future.
I'm deeply disappointed with how our World Cup campaign ended. I know we are capable of much more in every aspect than we showed, and that's one of the biggest reasons why this disappointment is so difficult to accept.
Representing the Czech Republic has always been the greatest honour of my career. That's why I don't want to make any decision in the heat of the moment. I'll take the time to reflect and decide what's best for everyone.

One thing is certain.

I'll be back.

Stronger. Hungrier. More determined than ever.

Thank you for standing by me through everything. Your support means more than words can say.

Koppen, currently Copenhagen's head of recruitment and scouting, has been offered the role of director of recruitment. Nils Koppen is eager to accept the role at West Ham, which is dependent upon him securing a work permit. Sources say he will attend a work permit hearing today (26/06), as West Ham look to get the go-ahead to put the finishing touches to the deal. Football Insider (Bad Source)

- Nils Koppen is set to be appointed as director of player recruitment at West Ham. A deal is close. Koppen will lead the recruitment of players but won’t be responsible for the overall football operation. A new football leadership structure will see Koppen work alongside head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, sporting director Mark Noble, and the board on football matters such as contract renewals, the academy and player sales. It is reiterated that he’s going to end up at the club bringing best financial proposal to West Ham. A deal is expected to accelerate in the coming days, with Fernandes being excluded from returning to pre-season. Matteo Moretto, Fabrizio Romano and Simon Stone - BBC (Okay Source/Good Source/Good Source)

- Soucek picked up an ankle injury while on international duty, a scan is set to take place. Although a wholesale terrible situation, depending on the severity of the injury this may (unintentionally) ward off suitors should he be injured throughout pre-season. While on international duty, players who face injury are to have their up to £7.5M per annum in wages paid by their respective National FA for the duration of the injury or up to a year. Official Source and ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- It is thought that that Soucek could be out for up to 3 months, possibly longer, though this isn’t officially confirmed by the club and there is set to be further analysis on the injury. Soucek is thought to be a good recoverer of an injury so the estimation may change. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

Roshane Thomas - The Athletic (Good Source)

- One forward we were looking to explore further at the tournament was Armando González who plays for Mexican side Chivas (CD Guadalajara). ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- Franculino Djú has been a long term target after another very strong season for Danish side FC Midtjylland. It is thought that the club did turn down a £30m offer in January for the player and he has a lot of interest including Premier League teams Everton and Fulham. Ben Jacobs and Jacob Steinberg - The Guardian, KUMB, Craig Hope - Daily Mail, ExWHUEmployee (Okay Source/Good Source/Questionable Source/Okay Source/Good Source)

Nuno may add more members of staff but that is as of yet undetermined. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

A number of German and Italian teams are looking at him but there is hope a Saudi team may also move. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- Newly promoted Venezia are said to be interested in Fullkrug. Redazione (Questionable Source)

- West Ham’s decision to secure Kiebar Lamadrid on a permanent deal is seen as a major statement of faith in the player’s potential. Those inside the club are convinced he has the qualities to become a key figure in the squad. Sources suggest that fitness setbacks were the only thing preventing him from playing a much bigger role last season. Twitter (Bad Source)

- Despite that there is a lot of expected interest from other clubs in the EPL and abroad. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

Scouts have been impressed by his performances and believe he could represent strong value in the current market. This follows tentative interest from last summer. Twitter (Bad Source)

A statement from David Sullivan - West Ham United FC

The following is a personal statement from David Sullivan and his legal representatives, published here in its entirety for the benefit of transparency…

A statement from David Sullivan

I have recently become aware that factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are due to be broadcast and published.

The false allegations levelled against me have been sensationalised by the media. After a lifetime spent building businesses in the adult industry in which I have met thousands of women, it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me. I categorically deny these claims.

I am a private man, and those who personally and professionally know the real David Sullivan, not the caricature invented by the tabloids, know exactly who I am and what I stand for. I am absolutely not the person the media has decided to paint me as.
I have not been provided with any proper explanation as to how these individuals or their claims were independently verified or assessed for credibility prior to publication. I believe that the entire process has been fundamentally unfair and completely lacking in any due impartiality. I will be suing the BBC for libel, along with any other media outlet that repeats any libelous allegations.

None of these allegations relate to my more than 30 years in football; West Ham United has been one of the greatest passions and privileges of my life. I care deeply about the club, its supporters, its players, its staff, and its future. At what is already a challenging and important time for the club, I refuse to allow personal matters concerning me to become an unnecessary distraction or a source of instability.
Therefore, after very careful consideration and with a heavy heart, I have decided to resign as Joint-Chair and Director of West Ham United FC with immediate effect.

This has been an incredibly painful decision to make, but it is one made out of love, respect, and responsibility toward a football club and a fan base that deserve absolute unity and focus moving forward.

I am stepping down to apply my full energy and attention on fighting these false allegations. I have officially engaged my legal team and we are preparing to issue legal proceedings in respect of each and every false complaint that has been made against me. I will be seeking full redress, legally and publicly, on every single front.

As I depart, I want to thank everyone connected with West Ham United, past and present, for the loyalty, friendship, memories and European adventures and successes that I will carry with me forever. West Ham United will always remain close to my heart, and I have total confidence that the Board of Directors and interim Chief Executive Officer Karim Virani will do everything they can to take the club forward in the right direction. I wish everyone connected with the club every success in the future.

I will not be making further public comment at this stage, but I reserve all legal rights available to me in relation to any false or defamatory allegations.

Championship wishlist - build your team

Fill with whoever you want to see in the 25 man squad, or even just the starting XI if you wish. Include new additions and/or players you think we can retain and you’d like to see staying. Be as realistic, optimistic or pessimistic as you like.

Free spots can cover positions that might need extra depth (3rd GK, 5th CB, 3rd Striker, etc). I’ve also included the manager despite Nuno being confirmed to stay just for some extra flavour, include him if you think he’s the right choice or go for someone else if you might’ve preferred a change.

The Relegation Roundup: News and rumours from the past week (Week 1 - 24/05-31/05)

This is going to be a weekly series summarising the news and rumours associated with the club. I’ll be making these separate posts likely until the usual transfer thread pops up at which I’ll move back over there.

**Ownership, management, recruitment and coaching staff.**

- Nuno Espírito Santo is set to remain Head Coach following our relegation to the Championship. https://www.whufc.com/en/news/club-statement-27-may-2026 (Official Source)

- There is an expectation this will come alongside a shuffle up with Nuno’s coaching staff. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- Assistant coach Paco Jemez seems set to leave after putting out a farewell message. Personal Instagram account (Official Source).

- Paco Jemez in an interview with Spanish radio El Partidazo de COPE: "Nuno has called me and told me he wants me to stay with him." (Official Source)

- In a somewhat cryptic Twitter post Paco has implied he may be staying, writing “But what if it wasn't the end...?”. (Official Source)

- The club is looking to invest in a new Director of Football. Kieran Scott at Middlesbrough is the only figure named thus far. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- Head of Analysis and Recruitment Max Hahn is expected to leave the club in the near future. This is thought to be brought on by the appointment of the incoming DoF, of who it is thought will bring analysts and scouts with them to fill Hahn’s role. ExWHUEmployee and Sean Whetstone (Good Source/Okay Source)

- Hahn has now left the club with internal analyst Dylan Curnell taking up the vacated role. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- With both these sizeable decisions being made it is thought there has been a shake up in the boardroom with Kretinsky strongly influencing both decisions. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

**Squad Rumours (Retaining and Outgoing)**

- The club wish to retain Mads Hermansen, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Tomas Soucek, Jarrod Bowen and Taty Castellanos in the Championship. Jacob Steinberg - The Guardian (Good Source)

- All other players are set to be openly available on the market. Jacob Steinberg - The Guardian (Good Source)

- Messages regarding the relegation have been put out by Bowen, Soucek, Wilson, Disasi, Summerville and Taty. Some may imply an inkling of willingness to stay, others seem to be more definitive farewells.

- Conflicting reports of Wilson’s future with saying he is likely to leave in his hope to chase the 100 Premier League goal record. Coventry City and a number of other clubs are said to be interested and can offer Wilson a greater wage than us. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- Despite that according to one source Callum Wilson has verbally agreed to a new one-year contract with West Ham, just a matter of weeks before his current deal is set to expire. KUMB (Questionable Source)

- As well as a further addendum by ExWHUEmployee that should he not get a suitable offer there may still be a chance for West Ham to retain him. ExWHUEmployee (Good Source)

- Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek have both indicated to Nuno Espirito Santo they would be willing to remain in the Championship with West Ham. KUMB (Questionable Source)

28th April, 2007. Going into the game against Wigan, West Ham sit 19th, 32 points - 4 points from safety. They have three games to play - Wigan, that same day, placed 16th. Bolton, 5th of May, placed 6th. Manchester United, 13th of May, placed 1st.

They beat Wigan away 0-3. 3 points gained. 18th place, 35 points. Now level with Wigan, 1 point from escaping the zone and 2 games to play.

Next is Bolton at home, another win, 3-1. 3 points gained. 17th place, 38 points. Out of the zone, but still a job to do, we still need one last point. Goal difference would relegate us if Wigan win the final game.

Final is Man United. Away. We win that too, 0-1. 3 points, 15th place. 41 points. Safe.

I’m not saying we will do this, but it has been done, and done by us at that. It isn’t over till it’s over.

When including penalties Soucek has also risen to be our 5th all-time Premier League top scorer (staying at 41 goals), trailing Di Canio (47 goals, of which 15 were penalties) and Mark Noble (47 goals, of which 28 were penalties).

Antonio has 68 goals when including penalties and Bowen has 64 when including penalties.
