I rebuilt the Palm OS classic Space Trader as a terminal game — v0.1.0 is out (free, open source, no Java needed)

>Hi all,

I've just released v0.1.0 of Beyond Space Trader, a terminal (TUI) remake of the

classic Palm OS game Space Trader by Pieter Spronck. It's a Java port (based on

the old open-source C#/Java ports) with the whole UI rewritten from scratch

using Lanterna.

It's a single-player space trading game that runs in any terminal:

• Trade across a galaxy of 120+ systems: buy low, sell high, chase shortages,

smuggle contraband and dodge the police.

• 17 ship types drawn as ASCII art (chassis + pieces + colour zones). The art

lives in editable text files — and there's a ship composer to tweak it.

• Encounters are a little scene of their own: fly with the arrows, fire with

space, dodge, flee, surrender or trade. Pirates, police and traders talk,

scan your hold, loot it, or hand you a bounty.

• Missions and special events: a stolen alien artifact, a kidnapped princess, a

space monster, an unstable reactor... plus a newspaper with rumours and a

quests panel that marks the next system on your map.

• Retirement goal: buy a moon and end the game rich.

No Java installation needed: the Linux/Windows packages bundle their own

runtime.

Downloads:

• Linux / Windows: https://github.com/antoniovazquezaraujo/beyond-space-trader/releases/tag/v0.1.0

• Snap: sudo snap install beyond-space-trader-tui

• itch.io: https://avaraujo.itch.io/beyond-space-trader-tui

Manual (EN/ES): https://antoniovazquezaraujo.github.io/beyond-space-trader/

Source (GPLv3): https://github.com/antoniovazquezaraujo/beyond-space-trader

It's an early release, so bug reports and ideas are very welcome — there are

issues open on GitHub. A 100×30 terminal is recommended (it scales down, but

that's where it looks best).

[OC] LeTrain v1.0.0-beta.4 is out — the terminal train tycoon now lets you record, undo and share your whole network as plain-text scenarios

New beta of LeTrain, the procedural train tycoon that runs in the terminal (and also in 3D from the

same codebase). Since the last post, the whole editing/automation side landed:

- Record/edit mode (`R`): freeze the world, build instantly, and journal every edit.

- Undo / redo (`u` and Ctrl+R, or `undo;` / `redo;`): deterministic, for construction and for

switches, semaphores and speed signals.

- Scenarios (`.ltr`): export your whole network as a small text recipe (seed + on build + on start +

program) and import anyone else's. The same seed rebuilds the same world, so a scenario travels

as plain text - no savegame needed. Validate one headlessly: `letrain-check my-scenario.ltr`.

- Built-in editor (`p`): Scenario / Program / Config tabs, a per-tab quick reference, and a

jump-to-error list.

- Experiment mode (`X`): snapshot the live world, try anything, then restore it.

- `letrain.cfg` now ships next to the launcher.

Still a pure TUI: 100% keyboard-driven, SSH-friendly, with the `:` console and the ANTLR4-based

automation DSL. Two launchers in the same download (`LeTrain2D`, `LeTrain`) plus `letrain-check`.

Apache-2.0, Java 17.

I made a programmable train simulator that runs in an ascii terminal.

LeTrain is a procedural train logistics and economy simulator that lets you play in two completely different dimensions. Start your logistics empire in a procedurally generated infinite world. Lay down tracks, build stations, and manage a dynamic economy where you transport coal, gold, rubies, and more across vast distances. ✨ Two Games in One The core logic of LeTrain is completely decoupled from its graphics engine, meaning you get two launchers with the game: • LeTrain2D: A blazing fast, classic terminal UI built with Lanterna. Experience the matrix-like thrill of ASCII art logistics. • LeTrain 3D: A modern 3D engine powered by LibGDX that renders the iconic ASCII characters as physical 3D objects in a smooth, orbiting camera environment. 🚂 Key Features • Infinite Worlds: Custom layered Perlin noise guarantees a completely unique landscape every time you play. • Deep Economy: Dynamic supply and demand. Connect resource extractors to cities and watch the world grow. • Automation Language: Want to get advanced? LeTrain features a custom scripting language (built with ANTLR4) that allows you to write actual code to automate your train routes and logic! • Open Source: LeTrain is completely free and open source.

I'm building an Open-Source Procedural Train Simulator with two engines: a modern 3D view and a classic 2D ASCII Terminal. Just released v1.0.0-beta.2! 🚂

Hey everyone! 👋

I've been working on
**LeTrain**
, a procedural railway logistics simulator written in Java 17 using LibGDX. The twist? You can play it seamlessly switching between a modern 3D engine and a classic, hardcore 2D ASCII terminal mode.

I just pushed a massive update (`v1.0.0-beta.2`) and I’d love to get your feedback! Here’s what’s new:
*   🚦
**Speed Signals:**
 You can now place speed limit signals on your tracks to control traffic flow. (Fully modeled in 3D and integrated into the terminal UI).
*   ✨
**Massive 2D Terminal Overhaul:**
 The ASCII mode now uses continuous box-drawing characters for tracks, crossings, and dead ends. It finally looks like a proper retro management game! Added smooth blinking animations for loading/unloading stations too.
*   🚂
**Reversing & Physics:**
 Completely overhauled the coupling physics. Reversing trains (or running double-headed consists) now works flawlessly.
*   ⌨️
**Better UX:**
 New unified camera deadzones and much better hotkey handling for semaphores.

**Where to get it?**
It's completely Open Source! You can download the ready-to-play `.zip` files for Windows/Linux (or the Snap package) directly from the GitHub releases page:

I'm currently working on adding a Passenger Trains economy based on procedural city sizes and punctuality. If you like management/automation games or Java/LibGDX development, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I built an infinite procedural Train Simulator that runs entirely in the terminal (TUI) 🚂💻

Hey everyone!

As a huge fan of terminal-based applications, I wanted to see if I could build a full-blown Tycoon/Logistics simulator that lives right inside the console. The result is LeTrain.

Everything is rendered purely in ASCII using the Lanterna library in Java. You can build vast rail networks, transport cargo (coal, gold, etc.), and manage a dynamic economy, all while staring at gorgeous high-speed text rendering.

Some features TUI fans might like:

• Extremely fast render loop. • Custom Perlin noise generation that carves lakes and mountains out of characters. • An ANTLR4-based scripting language so you can automate your trains directly with code. • (Bonus: I also built a 3D LibGDX wrapper around the same core logic if you ever get tired of the terminal view).

It's completely open-source. I just packed a fresh Release so you can download it and run it immediately from your shell.

Would love to hear what you think about the UI and the procedural generation!
