I’ve been asked to teach a “jump start” percussion class for beginning 5th & 6th graders. I’ll have about an hour. The assistant high school band director normally does the class but he’s not available.
I’m a classically trained percussionist with a college degree in music education. Thing is, for the last 20 years I’ve taught elementary general music, choir, and theatre. Not what I ever expected but I love it.
So while I have some ideas for what to hit (haha), what concepts and activities can you recommend?
EDIT: Oops, I left out the fact that this is a single-day thing. I have quite literally one hour.
I have record numbers for my choir program - 140 - this year, after having 85 when I started here a few years ago.
This is great. However, 2 of those 140 were boys whose moms decided to surprise them by signing them up for choir. Unsurprisingly, one has dropped, and the other just sits and stares daggers at me all class period long. The latter didn’t know he was in it until he got his class schedule.
I also just found out we had a parent do this to a kid for orchestra.
What do parents think is going to happen by forcing their kid into a voluntary performance ensemble without telling them?

I just got my first “first try” boss kill! The Witch of Hemwick. That was a really cool fight. Huge change of pace from Blood Starved Beast - I love that it made me slow down and observe the arena.
