Tips on Air Conditioning - Well insulated 1880's Victorian with finished attic.

My wife and I recently moved into our dream home, and we are trying to figure out how to keep the place cool for our first summer here. Down the road we are thinking about heat pumps or split AC, but for now, we wants something non-invasive.

We are debating whether to put window units up in the attic so the cold air flows down to the lower floors, or put window units on the first floor with a box fan blowing hot air out the attic windows.

What solutions have you found?

Edit: We live in Massachusetts near Boston.
