Where do I start after 16 years at the same company?
I’ve been at my current company for 16 years and I’m ready to look for another job, but I don’t even know where to start.
I started at my current company right out of college and worked my way up from the very bottom to my current role as a director-level individual contributor. The higher up I’ve moved, the more jaded I’ve become. I’ve watched senior leaders become increasingly more incompetent and make poor decisions that are very clearly not working out well. I’m tired of spinning my wheels and not feeling valued. I used to feel like the company and leadership was really committed to the mission but it no longer feels that way.
I know the grass isn’t always greener but I want to see what else is out there. I do have great health insurance and PTO, and my TC is ~$200k so I need to make sure the jump is worth it if I did decide to take another job. I earn significantly more than my partner so I can’t afford to take a pay cut.
I’m currently in the financial services industry with experience in operational risk management and project/program management. I have experience in people leadership as well. Open to moving to another industry.
What advice would you give me? How does one create a resume these days (using AI tools or no)? I updated my job descriptions on LinkedIn but I’m afraid to turn on “Open to Work” in case anyone at my current company were to see it (I know there’s an option to make it only visible to recruiters but I’m still worried).
