Venmo Scam? Help! I received payment for a product from an unrelated venmo account. Scam?
Last night, I made a deal for a laptop on facebook marketplace. As the buyer (person A) was on the way, he "accidentally" pre-sent the payment for the product to someone else in my recent venmo transations as he claims his phone screen was cracked and did it by mistake. I contact the person he sent the venmo payment to and verify they received it. They did. Now I notice the venmo payment came from someone else than the buyer, lets call them person B. I ask them who it is and they said its their wife and NOWWWW her screen is cracked and thats why she sent it to the wrong person. This is the point I start having suspicions that this is a hacked/stolen venmo account.
I ask for proof they know this person and they deny all requests I make. Screenshot of bank charge from venmo? no. Mail with her name but address blurred out? no. Phone call? ID picture? no. All they are willing to say that it is their wife and they will not involve them at all. He continues to demand the product or else he will call the police and I ask for more proof and he still denies. He keeps pressuring me to give the laptop or refund him so I block him.
This morning, the venmo account is sending me messages to pay them back or they will call the police. I believe that he is using a stolen account and thats also why I do not want to send the money back.
To sum up my suspicions
He prepaid for the product when I never asked
His phone was cracked so he accidently prepaid and also sent to wrong person, when asked about who the payment came from (person B), he said it was his wife and now her phone was cracked and that's why she sent by accident.
also when he came to pickup, I could see his car from inside ,my building. He claimed he was in a white car but his car was clearly black.
Could you guys let me know what to do next? I want to do the right thing to return his money if he is actually telling the truth but I also do not want to get scammed. TIA!
