thoughts on no-pet rentals?

I've been looking at tons of apartments in Surrey, Langley, and Cloverdale to eventually rent and I'm noticing almost all of them have a very strict no-pet policy. I understand landlords might be hesitant because animals are animals but is that not what the security deposit is for? But it's starting to get on my nerves, as someone who doesn't plan to marry or have children and knowing a majority of my friends are in the same boat, all that we really just want in this economy is a one bedroom apartment and a dog or cat for companionship.

I came across a rental unit that didn't list any policy about pets anywhere and when I reached out I mentioned in my introductory email that I am looking for a place that is pet-friendly (I have a senior pom, but eventually would get another similar sized dog). The realtor handling the unit was super rude and responded to my email with "this unit is available ASAP. no pets allowed. so do you still want to view the unit or not?" I was like lol I am good wtf.

I am sure there is way more to it than this (and that not everyone is a dog or cat person) but some of these places have been listed for a WHILE and they're clearly aggressive about wanting someone to sign onto a lease but maybe loosen up some of that strictness about pets. These days most single people are opting for one.

BTW I lived in a different city for a couple years a long time ago in a no-pet unit and it was depressing as hell. One day in the city I came across an abandoned dog that attached itself to me and I spent all night outside with it until animal rescue could take it. I wanted badly to take it home with me (better than being outside with it in the cold) and/or to adopt it and the fact that I didn't even have the option to do so because my landlord was so strict was what made me realize I just can't ever sign into a lease like that again. Still have no idea what ended up happening to that sweet dog.

potential red flags for available rental units?

hey all, I've been looking at some available studios or one bedroom apartments in vancouver/lower mainland for a while now. I am not in a huge rush to move because I work from home, so I have the luxury of getting to take my time with it but I've noticed that there are a handful of empty units that have been online for a really long time. whenever I go to try scheduling a viewing, it says they're all full, but then ill get an automated text a few days later saying more viewings are available, but then they're all booked up again

Is there an explanation for this other than tons of people are viewing that apartment daily and choosing not to rent it?

Also noticing getting completely ghosted when sending an inquiry to available units, some of which have been on the site for over a month. My email always lists that im a single female, non-smoker, no pets, and that I can provide paystubs to prove I can make rent each month and then I hear nothing back at all, completely ghosted. For comparison, I lived in Montreal for years and moved a few times and this kind of behavior never happened, I was always getting responses and booking requests to have a unit shown to me and could always find a place really quickly, like within a week of my initial search.

I'm quite frankly very confused about vancouver and if I'm just doing something wrong.

EDIT: One other thing I noticed is the rental showing a price on the site and in the title but then in the "details" section, the owner has manually written a more expensive price (for example, a unit could be listed as $1900/month and then you go down to read the details of the place and then it says "$2,200/month". Unsure what to even make of this. Feels scummy.

Question about dangerous e scooter and e bike behavior on pedestrian roads

Hi all, I know this topic is being beaten to death at this point but the problem clearly isn’t going away. Typing this after almost getting mowed down by three kids on e-bikes and it’s happening everytime I go for a walk.

Are there any legal ramifications to film this behavior and post it on reddit or facebook ? At the very least to have them ID’d and dealt with (police warnings, fines, or even though disciplinary action through their school)?

how to best handle a newbie mistake regarding ETFs and US Conversion Rates

Hi there

EDIT: Apologies, I got confused, the ETF I purchased was SPXU (TSX) so there is no conversion fee as I thought, confused it with the (NYSE) one since the names are same on WS. However, any general advice on ETFs are still greatly appreciated. Thank you to the people who commented because it made me dig deeper into things

I recently started investing and have little to no financial literacy (parents didnt have it so I am now teaching myself). I opened up an account on wealthsimple to put my RSP, TFSA, and FHSA into ETFs (in total, across all these accounts I have about $60,000 however I only used $900 for ETFs so far). I purchased SPXU following the advice of a friend, only to look into it deeper and realized there are conversion fees due to USD > CAN.

I don't want to cause any more issues but I was wondering what's the best and worst case scenario here, if anyone has any advice? Do I sell, take my losses on the conversion and just try again with an ETF that wont result in conversion fees for Canadians (such as XIC)? I want to make sure I fully understand what I am getting into before putting more of my money into ETFs

(for context, my savings were in multi-holdings before but due to high MER, I am wanting to start moving away from that)

bosses creating unnecessary middlemen

Hi everyone, in the past year I joined the "upper ranks" at a company I'd been working at for a while at a more entry-level role. It was a lot more simple back then where I'd just report to my manager and do the work assigned to me, although the pay sucked. Ever since my promotion, I've had to work with a lot of middle-management type of people who seemingly don't understand that the way they do things is not just largely inefficient but straightup stupid.

Multiple times I've had a manager ask me to ask a different manager something over Slack. There is no reason I need to part of this, he could have just asked that manager directly himself. There is no barrier to him DMing this other guy directly. It's not just one person either that behaves this way, it's almost all of them? And now I'm always in the middle asking and relaying information that could have just been one direct line.

None of these asks are large or complicated things either, I don't have any special expertise that would make me particularly apt to be the one playing telephone in the middle. It's been as simple as "Can you ask if x knows about y?" or "Can you ask [IT person] to reset my password for [software]?" And most recently, after I had said a particular person was an SME on a project, a manager asked "can he provide me some context on xyz?" and I said "yes, he definitely could if you reached out and maybe asked to schedule a meet", to which he responded "ok, please ask him for me." (??? I don't know your schedule, I am not a receptionist either, why not set it up yourself?)

Is this a corporate thing (this is my first corporate job) or is the company I work for just uniquely annoying in this way? How do you even say no without coming across as hard to work with? I don't know if this helps or is relevant but I'm a female aged 32 in a technical role (not administrative in any way, my job is not to schedule things or be a liaison).

Reasonable explanation as to why an instructor I am observing is always rude to me?

Hi everyone I have been doing the Club Pilates Teacher Training Program and am currently in the process of completing all my hours, which requires Observation as well as Practice Teaching, among other things. Because my work schedule is pretty limiting right now, it just so happens that for observations I can really only go to the same instructor at the studio near me.

I don't want to include any information that could reveal which studio or the name of the instructor but I always fill out the observation sheet in advance so that the studio (and ideally the instructor) knows I will be coming. I even told her early on I will likely be coming for the same time every week, to observe 1-2 classes at a time. However, when I came for my first Observation hour she made a really snarky comment toward me about me being there and it made me a bit uncomfortable. I'm also not too sure if the students enjoy her class because it's not just that she is unfriendly toward me, she seems a bit over it entirely and in the past I've personally avoided taking her classes because she scared me.

I've also had moments where I have come in for booked studio time and she's said something to the extent of "you're using this space? for how long?" in a really annoyed tone, and then will sigh and roll her eyes when I say I booked it for an hour. It's happened a few times now, to the point where I've wanted to just tell her to refer to the sign up sheet so she's not constantly surprised and somehow inconvenienced that I've booked times when there are no classes.

I guess in a way this is a bit of a vent. I've wanted to work at this studio but the vibes from this instructor is really killing my spirit and it puts into question the work environment. I'm following all the rules but is it possible I am breaking some unspoken rule of CPTT? I've made some time to observe other instructors and they've been really sweet and even make time to talk to me and learn more about me so it seems like it's 100% a her problem, but I don't know.
