Utterly disappointed with Kumar Mess (Alagar Kovil Road) – Paying a premium for awful, tasteless food. Avoid!
Hey everyone,
I’ve lived in Madurai for years, and we all know this city is a food paradise. We are absolutely spoiled for choice when it comes to incredible, flavorful, and iconic non-veg food. Which is why it absolutely breaks my heart—and honestly, angers me—to see what some places are getting away with charging these days for downright terrible food.
Case in point: Kumar Mess (Alagar Kovil Road). I had the misfortune of eating there recently, and the experience was devastatingly bad.
Here's the breakdown of what we ordered and how horribly they messed it up:
Mutton Biryani (₹350): Absolute robbery. Three hundred and fifty rupees for this? The rice had zero aroma, it was completely bland, and the mutton pieces were incredibly tough, stringy, and lacked any flavor. Madurai has street-side stalls that serve biryani ten times better than this at a fraction of the cost. This was dry, lifeless, and honestly insulting to the name of biryani.
Mutton Chukka (₹300): This should have been the star, but it was a disaster. It was either overly greasy or dry as cardboard, with barely any of the rich, spicy masalas that a proper Madurai Chukka is known for. The portion size for ₹300 was tiny, and it felt like they just threw some poorly cooked meat into generic masala.
Mutton Kola (₹200 - 4 pieces, so ₹50 each): These were incredibly underwhelming. They lacked the melt-in-the-mouth texture and spiced perfection that Kola Urundai is famous for. Tasted like they were mostly binding agent/maida with barely any mutton flavor.
Pepper Chicken Roast (₹200): Just a salt-and-pepper mess with zero depth of flavor. The chicken felt like it had been sitting around and was just tossed in a pan.
Egg Fry (₹40) & Extra Rice (₹50): basic, but again, overpriced for what it was.
Our bill came to a whopping ₹1,197 (inclusive of taxes) for just two people. That is an insane amount of money to pay for food that was barely edible. I felt like I was chewing through cardboard half the time, and the spices—or lack thereof—were just sad.
How does a legendary name or a well-known "mess" get away with serving such low-quality, subpar food to locals? I get that places get crowded and touristy, but this was genuinely bad. If you're going to charge premium "hotel" prices, at least have the decency to serve food that doesn't taste like it was prepped three days ago.
Save your hard-earned money, guys. There are so many better, smaller mess options in Madurai that actually care about their food and don't loot you.
Has anyone else eaten here recently? Am I the only one who thinks their quality has absolutely tanked, or is this just the norm for them now?
Edit: Even in Dindigul they charge high but the quality is good even though they serve lesser quantity feels fulfilled
