Are genograms actually useful and practical to apply in real clinical work?

Hey everyone! I’ve been thinking about genograms and family/system maps. I’m a family therapist in training in Greece, and genogram is taught as an essential tool here. In theory they seem incredibly useful, but in practice I often find that they become hard to maintain once cases get complex.

For those who use them regularly in your work:

  • What makes them worth the effort?
  • What makes them burdensome?
  • Do you make them using paper/whiteboard, digital tools, or something else?
  • Are there privacy or documentation issues that make digital versions difficult?
  • What would an ideal workflow look like?
