Bob Stephenson's Photo of Loreto In The 1970s The Summer Before Baja California Sur Became A State.
Photo by Bob Stephenson, & here are his words recounting this moment:
"There were no golf courses, no condo's, no resorts. Telephone service was just being installed. The Mex-US exchange rate was around 20 pesos to a dollar.
This picture represents what I first loved about Baja, her industrious people. Building a street, one brick at a time. If you could dream it, Mexico would build it.
I distinctly recall taking this picture the spring before Baja Sur became a State, 1974. In anticipation of a huge Statehood celebration Loreto wanted a modern progressive appearance. Prior to Statehood, all the area south of Guerrero Negro was officially known as “El Territorio Sur de Baja”"
And these were the first paved streets of Loreto.
Isn't it magical how we can stop time with a camera?"
