where are you buying your high quality socks (and for that matter, pants)?

we've got a new engineer starting in our team soon. the codebase is challenging and it normally takes at least a year to become capable of working independently. I've been here 3 years and there are parts I still don't understand. historically the onboarding process has been pairing on increasingly complex tasks.

however, my team now find ourselves not pairing with each other. each of us is just pairing with AI. the juniors are feeling a bit despondent because they're not truly learning.

i'm wondering how on earth someone can get up to speed when they aren't physically writing the code themselves. do we impose a moratorium on ai assistance for the first 6 months?
