Helicopter Slinging - Just throwing with different arm angles

Helicopter Slinging - Just throwing with different arm angles

I have dropped my arm angle to sidearm for my helicopter throw. But this video shows you can use an overhand throw too.

Slinging a sidearm version of the Helicopter style

I used to throw the helicopter overhand. But lately I have been using a true sidearm delivery. Pretty accurate and comfortable to throw, although I don’t throw as hard as Byzantine or Figure 8.

Slinging styles 3 months after learning to use a sling

These are the slinging styles I am using after 3 months of learning to sling.

At first I threw the Greek style but have replaced it with the Byzantine to get more power. I also evolved my helicopter from a 3/4 arm angle to now more a true sidearm throw.

Most of my practice has been on the figure 8 including modifying the figure 8 for more distance

Throwing Heat!! Slinging right through a fence

Putting your phone behind chain link fence and throwing tennis balls at the phone is NOT a good idea. Occasionally the ball goes right thru the fence!

Closer look at the Twin Loop sling release

Filmed the release from my Twin Loop sling by holding my phone in my hand. Kind of hard to do but luckily only threw my phone once for no damage.

Closer look at the Twin Loop sling release

Held phone in hand and filmed the sling release.

Was interesting and more difficult than I thought. But luckily only threw my phone once for no damage!!

Am now more impressed with others who have posted so much better sling release videos

I added a “Pro Step” to my Figure 8 slinging!

From baseball, an outfielder will “crow hop” or “pro step” to add forward body momentum to the throw.

The difference is the “pro step” foot movement is the rear foot stepping BEHIND the front foot and this keeps hips closed throughout the movement.

Hips closed means body is coiled up and ready to throw.

In any case, today was the first day I tried to add the pro step to my figure 8 and I had some success.

“Crow Hop” Slinging! #slinging #sling

Any suggestions on how to improve this “crow hop”? I feel the timing is wrong.

Tried a lower height target

Really struggled to bring the throws down. Been slinging at tall targets and upward angles for distance lately.

Some improvements today

Some improvements today with several tennis balls slung over 90 yards.  I really think there is potential with this “early power stroke” idea!

You can see in the video I improved on starting the power stroke early. Also measured my launch angle and surprised it was not terrible.

Trying to start power stroke early

Work in progress. Trying to have the sling more rearward when front foot hits ground and the power stroke begins. The idea being the more rearward the sling, the more time/distance the sling can accelerate during the power stroke. If I ever get it figured out, should get more velocity and distance.

Learning to sling for distance

Been trying distance throws. A lighter and longer sling would help for sure. But I am currently trying to figure out the technique and be efficient. Not 100% sure I got it down yet, but will keep trying!
