En verdad estuvo guapo cuando el cielo se ennegreció del todo y volvió a clarear.

Reddit keeps bombarding me with ads about this. Is it really that hard to get the NIE?

I’m asking simply out of curiosity. I’m Spanish and lived here for my whole life, so I don’t need it. But Reddit thinks otherwise, and keeps bombarding me with ads for services that would get me a NIE for myself for amounts ranging from 200€ to 400€. Those are outrageous prices for a rather simple procedure, unless I’m missing something.

For reference, the government charges a 10€ fee for the NIE currently. AFAIK, getting it is as simple as going to a police station (or nearest consular office if you’re abroad) with your passport, a duly completed form, and proof that you need it for professional, economical or social reasons.

It doesn’t look to me like someone would need legal professionals to deal with it. Then again, am I missing something regarding the NIE?

Edit: To clarify, I’m referring to the Número de Identificación de Extranjeros (Foreigners’ ID number), not the visa or the residence permit. Those are completely different stories, and I completely understand that they can be challenging.

I assumed the NIE could be granted to any non-national that needs it, and hence shouldn’t pose a challenge. For example, according to this fact-checking website, it is even granted to migrants who irregularly crossed the border and are in the process of being deported.
