Is July really this quiet on the Francés?

Hi all,

A torn pilgrim here. I'm a couple of days in after re-starting in León and I can't believe how empty the trail is. I thought July would be a bit quieter, but not dead. I've been choosing albergues with dinners to meet other pilgrims but they're all almost empty. Is it because of the heatwave(s)?

The best part of the Camino for me is meeting all the other pilgrims and the magical atmosphere. As much as I don't mind walking alone and I always say "the Camino provides", (and it has!) this is not the experience that I've been looking forward to since I left the trail last year.

I'm currently making plans to go home and (if lucky enough) come back early June 2027 to finally finish. Weirdly, last year I was content not going all the way to Santiago as I had "unfinished business" back home which I thought would be answered by now. It hasn't been.. so maybe I'm not meant to finish the Camino journey yet either?

I'd love to hear fellow peregrinos' thoughts or your experiences of July on the Francés?

Please be gentle on me , I swear, being a quitter is not my style!

First time on the Camino

Hello all, hope you're having a great start to the week. I will soon be embarking on my first Camino and wanted to ask you, what is one thing you wish you knew before you started? I'm obviously very excited but a little nervous all the same.

Thank you in advance!

Camino Portugues: any advice?

Hi everyone,

In the first half of August, I’ll be walking the Portuguese Camino de Santiago, starting from Vigo, passing through Santiago, and ending in Finisterre. It will be a total of 10 days of walking, covering around 184 km.

Do you have any advice on what I should bring with me, especially in terms of clothes and equipment? I’m a little worried about the temperatures.

Also, is there any kind of training you would recommend? I’m used to doing one-day treks of around 30 km, but I’ve never walked several days in a row. I want to make sure I’m in good physical shape before starting.

Thanks in advance!

I walked the Camino del Norte 16 years ago. Commemorated it with my first tattoo.

Found this cool Cruz de Santiago design after pouring through every cross I could find, and then had the artist add the Pilgrim silhouette and fill in parts of the cross with red. Pretty happy with it. Buen camino!

United States Options, or something similar?

I'm looking to get into some thru-trekking before going overseas, It's my dream to do the full Camino de Santiago from Lisbon, however I'm halfway across the world and I would love some options that are more local, in a sense. I know about the Appalachian Trail, the PCT, and the John Muir Trail, however I'm looking for something less in the wilderness and more of walking from town to town.

We don't really have hostels here, which drives up the cost, but I figured I'd ask if any of you fellow Americans know a good hike.

itinerary, send bags ahead?

We're planning on doing the last 100k (Sarria to Santiago ) in mid september as a small taste of the Camino before a longer walk next spring or fall.

The current plan is:

✈️ Los Angeles to Madrid

🚞 Madrid to Sarria

🚶🏻Sarria to Santiago

✈️ Santiago to Paris

✈️ Paris to Los Angeles

  1. Is it easy to have 2 carry on bags sent from Sarria to Santiago, for us to pick up when we get there?

  2. We'll stay in private accommodations - do we need to plan ahead, or can we reserve our first night and then play it by ear?

  3. Are we more likely to see rain between Sept 15 - 25?

  4. Any variations on the route you might recommend are welcome.

Thanks!

World Cup Portugal vs Spain

In case you’re out of the loop because you’ve been away from your devices, Portugal is playing Spain today at 8 PM if you’re in Portugal or 9 PM if you’re in Spain. It doesn’t matter if you’re a soccer (football) fan. If you have the opportunity to experience watching this match with the locals you should jump at the chance. It’ll be an experience you won’t forget.

Where to buy bubble wrap on the Francés between Pamplona and Puente La Reina

Due to a series of unfortunate events, I have been carrying my 1.6kg laptop with me on the Camino. It is slowing me down like crazy and making my life a misery in the heat. I’m also constantly scared about it being stolen or damaged. I need to send it off to Casa Ivar ASAP, but I also need to bubble wrap it for extra protection, and I can’t find any bubble wrap. I have tried two post offices and neither had bubble wrap. The workers couldn’t tell me where I could get bubble wrap either.

Please please please, if anyone knows any guaranteed places to buy bubble wrap on this part of the Francés, let me know. I need this laptop off my back.

Leave SJPP either Aug 23rd or Sept 16th?

I’m am trying to decide between starting my Camino Frances on either Aug 25th or Sept 16th from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. Will there really be that much difference in numbers walking then and temperatures? Will the difference of 3 weeks really make that much difference re having a Camino which is too hot to walk in after 1pm or a Camino with cooler nights and a much higher possibility of rainy days? I know weather can’t be accurately predicted but I just can’t decide which start date would be a better bet for having a good experience.

Camino Primitivo? Food/Restaurants

Planning to go in 2 weeks.

What's restaurants/food/water like en route.

Is there lunch stops?

We'll pack super light, 3 days of summer clothes only and so light backpacks about 2-3kg without water.

Which camino should I choose?

Hi everyone!

I'm a 26-year-old woman from Portugal, and I'll be free for the whole month of August. I'd really like to spend that time walking a Camino, but I don't want to plan everything in detail beforehand. I like the idea of being flexible and deciding things as I go.

I walked the Portuguese Central Camino in 2018, and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. This time, I'd love to try a different route. I've already ruled out the Portuguese Coastal Camino since I live nearby and have already walked parts of it.

My biggest concern is that I'll be walking alone. I'm completely fine with solo travel, but one of my favourite memories from my first Camino was meeting other pilgrims and forming little groups along the way. I'd really love to have that experience again.

Since I live in Portugal, getting to the starting point isn't an issue.

Which Camino would you recommend, especially for August and for a solo female? I'd love to hear your experiences and any advice you might have.

Thank you!

Saludos

Random Fireworks?

Waking in through Arcade, Caldas de Reís, Padron. What are the random loud explosions? We are thinking Fireworks but they seem to be during the middle of the day? Any ideas why? Not important just curious.

Camino and finding restaurants serving food

Im from the US, anyone else having a tough time finding a restaurant that service food around 5pm-6pm? I came across two that told me it was drinks only at the time.
I’m an early raiser and usually is looking for food around this time so I can sleep early. But the Spain eating culture is so different. Most restaurants don’t open until 8pm. It’s tougher on a Sunday cause supermarkets are all closed.

Money on the meseta

Up to this point (from SJPDP), I have used card for albergues and larger meals, and cash when necessary or for incidentals. Is the meseta between Burgos and Leon very different that way? Or similar? I’m planning my cash withdrawals for the rest of the way to Santiago.

Buen Camino
