I’m sure many of us have a long, hot parade tomorrow. Unlike rehearsals, we typically can’t wear light colored clothing, or have a cool towel on the neck, ect. And of course there’s also the fact you can’t put your (sometimes very heavy) instrument down for about 45 minutes.

Lips going numb when I play horn

To start off, here’s some background into that might be useful

I’m not primarily a horn player, most of what I do these days is bass trombone, euphonium too. I only play horn about once a week.

I’ve had somewhat were fairly long term lip injuries related to nerve damage in the past, which of course meant my lips were numb (3 years ago)

But the odd thing is, it’s ONLY happening when I play horn. No other instrument does this to me. The feeling will last the rest of the day, sometimes even the next day I won’t quite have 100% feeling back.

Does anyone know possible reasons as to why this could be happening, if it’s something to worry about, and what I can do to fix it?

Front Carry instrument exercises

Marching bass trombone this season! It’s pretty dang heavy for front carry. Other than, of course, just practicing holding the instrument in that position, anyone have any work out suggestions to hit those muscles?

When I was in college I very much went the instrumental route, ended up teaching choir. Didn’t learn nearly as much about classifying voice types as I should’ve.

I have this student that’s just really confusing me and I’m not sure where to put her/ what to tell her.

I’ve had this girl sing alto all year. (High school sophomore) She sounds like an alto. Her speaking voice is definitely one of an alto, maybe lower than a typical alto. She has a lower voice break. (Around where the tenor voice typically is). She has down to a C3. Tone color sounds more alto or mezzo but definitely not soprano.

Recently she asked if she could sing soprano so of course with all of that information above I thought for sure that wouldn’t work.

To my surprise, she wasn’t super comfortable with anything below an A. And she also had a very strong, consistent F#6. I thought that should not be possible in an altos voice? I don’t know what’s going on here.

To protect her privacy I won’t be sharing any recordings, but with all of that information, anyone know what I should look at?
