Pitchfork’s Headlights review

I wanted to sing this article’s praises because I was surprised by how thoughtful it is, especially in contrast to some other disappointing high-profile reviews of Headlights... I think Ian Cohen really hits the nail on the head while analyzing the themes of the album, discussing how it’s arguably Alex’s most personal and confessional work so far. The last line of his review - “Sometimes you hear the money that went into Headlights, but you always hear the love even louder” - is really satisfying and beautiful. Headlights sounds so honest and reflective and full of love, and I love that a critic hears it in the same way.

Cohen is the same Pitchfork contributor who reviewed Rocket, and you can hear in his writing a kind of pride that he has for Alex and his evolution as an artist. Definitely recommend a read.

Ambiguity

Sometimes I feel lost in the ambiguous feeling of Alex’s music. It is relatable, but it ends up resonating with me on a very subconscious level which can be confusing to understand. His style of creating is fundamentally different from my own as a writer because I’m someone who feels the need to name my emotions in order to express and release them. Alex doesn’t. He works from a place of intuition and feeling when he makes music. I find that listening to his stuff dredges up a lot of ambiguous and honestly overwhelming feelings in me where I find little room for release. It’s powerful and almost poisonous. I don’t understand how I can love someone’s art so intensely and still have absolutely no clue who they are as a person or as a soul.

Sometimes listening to his music feels like sifting through an emotional puzzle. When I try to put those pieces together, I barely understand what I’m looking for. It’s like I’m dreaming, drinking in the feeling, but rarely able to express it with enough clarity. Alex’s music has that dreamlike quality in spades and it’s addicting. I think it’s one of the best qualities of his work because it’s foreign to me.

Does Alex’s music hit anyone else in a similar way?

Looking to buy Race on vinyl. Slash serious.

I’ve been saving up money for a while now to buy Race on vinyl, and I was wondering if anyone has a copy that they’re willing to part with. Name your price! My budget fits in with what goes for standard on discogs.

Shoot me a message if you’re serious. I’m looking for proof that you’re not trying to scam me, which I’m happy to provide as well. Thanks :)

Don’t worry guys I got this

I saw Alex G in Del Mar tonight and the crowd was terrible. The audience was so young and fucking disrespectful, they were all talking during the quiet moments of the show and all throughout the songs they didn’t know. Nobody was dancing or reacting to the music at ALL except to yell out their requests during the middle of songs. The way that his younger fans conduct themselves almost makes me never want to go to another Alex G show again. Absolutely zero concert etiquette. I made all of this up btw

Crowd bad

Me hate crowd. Crowd too dull. Then crowd rowdy. Young people too young, should have been born earlier. Me farm karma. Give upvotes
