new contract -- can we could on at least 3% raises per year?

**COUNT ON sorry

**please note i do not think 3% is good i’m just trying to do some math on future finances!

i'm newish to the DOE (3 years in, but with past experience so higher on the pay scale) and trying to figure out if this salary is doable long term. a 3% raise every year isn't great, but it is a guaranteed increase. one of my coworkers who has been in the DOE for 22 years told me there have been long periods with no raises whatsoever, which is definitely worrying when trying to plan for children and the cost of childcare/housing! does anyone have any longterm sense if we should continue to count on small raises annually? or any updates on current contract negotiations?

are there any jobs for non-licensed engineers?

if you have a Masters in Engineering but not a bachelors and are not eligible for the FE/EIT/PE pathway, are there any possible jobs you could do? if so, what are they like and what are the salaries like?

biological and ecological engineering - licensing from a masters degree?

hello! i am a bit confused about licensing possibilities and wondered if anyone had insight. i do not have an undergraduate engineering degree. i am considering a masters in engineering in biological and ecological engineering (online). the masters program is not ABET accredited, but the undergraduate program at the school for BEE is accredited -- does the masters program get "grandfathered" in, or will this pose a problem for taking the FE exam (NYS) and licensing? and, with biological and ecological engineering, is it possible to get a license in environmental engineering? thank you!

Thoughts on the BEE MEng program through Ecampus?

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone is or has completed the BEE MEng program through Ecampus and can advise on how difficult it was, how manageable the workload was (taking ~2 classes per term while working - doable?), if the Ecampus classes were well-taught, and if you felt the degree was worth it (hire-ability wise) after you finished? Just any impressions anyone has would be welcome!

Thanks so much!

masters in environmental science vs environmental engineering for job security?

hello! i am currently enrolled in a masters program for environmental science which includes a thesis and should take 2 years. my goal was to go into bioremediation research & development. i have the option to switch to an environmental engineering program instead, which would take 1 extra year as i do not have all the prerequisite classes and would need to take some. given the state of funding for environmental science right now and likely for the next decade, it seems like this might be a safer path that could still get me to the same goal. its just an extra year in school while i work full time is a bit overwhelming but i could do it!

does anyone have a recommendation as to which type of program offers greater job security and options? are engineering jobs in r&d available? thank you!

Advice on whether to switch grad programs - getting a MEng vs MS?

Hello! I am currently a masters student in environmental science. I am attempting a career switch and my end goal is to research/develop microbial biotechnology (bioremediation processes, plastics alternatives...). I do not have a STEM undergraduate degree so am using my current program to fill gaps in my education as well as get research experience through my thesis.

Through my time in this program and looking into research being done by others in microbial biotech, it seems like chemical engineers are often the ones doing this work, and not research scientists. I do not want to fully switch grad schools and lose the credits I have completed, but the school I attend also has a "Biological and Ecological Engineering" MEng program that I could possibly switch to that would have overlap between my existing credits so I wouldn't lose them (all).

I was considering pursuing a PhD (perhaps a bit delusionaly!) which is why I wanted the research experience, but I also am cognizant that I don't necessarily want to saddle myself with an extensive 9 year educational plan (finishing masters program, finishing the extra courses I'm taking to fill gaps, then enrolling in and completing a PhD) and may be better off setting myself up to have the type of jobs I want with my masters, instead of relying on the chance that I could get additional education.

Any advice? It's not a chemical engineering degree, but BEE seems to overlap with remediation and microbial tech as well, and could be a good terminal degree to pursue this work. On the other hand, an MS seems more helpful for research in the long run, and the MEng does not require a thesis...

Thank you!

switching between grad programs at OSU?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone had any experience or advice on switching grad programs at OSU. I am currently enrolled in the Masters of Environmental Science grad program (ecampus) but through the learning I am doing and my thesis research, I've come to wonder if what would be the most useful to me is actually an engineering degree... I didn't initially consider this as I do not have the correct background from undergrad, though I am working through the math courses in my current program. I am thinking about whether it would be possible to switch into the Biological and Ecological Engineering program (not decided or anything, but wanting to weigh the option with all the information basically).

A few overall questions:

  1. What is the process like for switching between grad programs? Is it possible? Does already being enrolled help at all or is it total re-admission?

  2. Would you think any of the credits from enviro science would transfer over to the engineering program?

  3. Is there any sort of "bridge" with that program where I could enroll and take courses I am missing first (some math, some science) and then get into the core courses?

Thanks very much if anyone has info that could be helpful!
