Help with holes

I’m knitting my first pair of mittens (the holding hands mittens by crochetedbybogusia) and ended up with a hole near the base of the thumb. I’m afraid it’s too late to go back now, but is there anything I can do to prevent this on the second hand? The instructions said to only pick up 1 st from the base of the thumb to add to the sts on hold.

The mittens also have flaps on the palms and thumb so you can open the mittens up for easy access, but the first stitches of these openings are extremely big/loose. Any tips for avoiding that too? Would love to figure this out for the right hand and then maybe I’ll end up re-knitting the left anyways

Trapped bird on Greene

Update: bird has been freed!!

Saw this on the way to the train. On Greene between Irving and Knickerbocker, didn’t get the exact building #. I think it’s a Starling.

Edit: Called 311 and they were no help. Won’t even send someone. Someone pls pls set it free if you’re in the area. I was in a rush and too scared to mess with the cage, sorry!
