I’m 32 years old [MTF] and have lived away from my family for the last 12 years. Growing up, any inkling of my trans identity was met with pure hostility, so it took some time away from them to gain some autonomy and explore my gender in privacy. I’ve been socially transitioning since 2019 but didn’t begin HRT until 2024. I keep my life largely separate from them and boymod when I do see them once or twice a year.

One of my many jobs is illustrating album covers for record labels. I did one for Warp Records and I casually shared that news with my family because I’ve been a Warp listener since I was 10. Turns out they ordered a copy, where I’m credited as my current name. The record arrived and they saw the credit and were perplexed as to why it wasn’t my deadname on there.

My supportive sister (the only one who knows) called to warn me they crashed out about the credit and interrogated her on why it was a woman’s name. They haven’t contacted me yet, but I’m mentally preparing to tell them I’m trans. It’s silly because I’m an independent adult feeling like a kid in this situation again, but I don’t want to go no contact with them.

Like, what should I say? What should I prepare for? My dad is deep in the manosphere and has barely said a word to me in years while my mom responds very poorly to big news. My nervous system is shot and my thoughts are all clamoring together. Any thoughts, insights and suggestions are welcomed.
