Chiptune MIDI Generator

i built notebin.fm strictly as a passion project for my love of MIDI tracks and chiptunes.

i am working on an open library similar to freesound.org but for MIDI and algorithmic MIDI sketchpad for chiptune writing. Right now, the engine is locked to NES 8-bit voice limitations to give you a quick 8-bar motif when staring at a blank tracker or DAW grid.

there are no paywalls, no ads.. free sign up allows you to save, edit and manage your MIDI rolls. i am fortunate enough that this is a self funded project hence why i am not asking for $10 for 5 MIDI gens or something dumb like that.

How it works:
* 8-Bit NES Constraints: Every seed outputs a 4-channel .mid file mapped to 8-bit voice layouts (Melody, Chords/Arps, Triangle Bass, and Noise Drums).

* Rules, Not Audio Renders: Uses code-based music theory rulesets for scale harmonization and voice leading, outputting clean, unrendered MIDI notes.

* In-Browser Preview: Audition seeds directly in the browser via Web Audio and Freesound samples before downloading.

* Permanent Addresses: Every seed gets a permanent link so you always get the exact same notes at that URL.

Here is a live example from the engine:
Sunset-757 (Boss Fight in Am at 180 BPM): https://notebin.fm/gen/boss-sunset-757

Looking for feedback:
Before I heavily expand into 16-bit console chips like the SNES (SPC700) or Neo Geo (FM synthesis), I would love to get your thoughts on how the NES voice arrangements feel. Does the channel separation map well to your tracker/DAW setup?

What it doesn't do:
It won't write a full song or export tracker formats directly. It is just an 8-bar starting point so you can drag the .mid into your setup and do the actual composing.

Welcoming any feedback on the generator here:

built a free to use (non-AI) MIDI generator at notebin.fm

a melody & drums, from theory.

the generator writes a melody, a second line (countermelody), chords, a bassline and drums in any key, from one of 59 styles, and hands you the file.

no account, nothing to install. there is no AI model in it and it was not trained on anything: it is music theory written down as rules, which is why every piece it writes can list the rules that wrote it. what it makes is yours outright.

listen, download or edit the midi files or individual tracks as you wish at

notebin.fm/generate

full guide on the tool
notebin.fm/help/generate

fyi.. only to prevent abuse and possible DDoS attacks, I have required d1scord as the auth for online editing and saving to the site. generation doesn’t require an account. no paywall, ads, or selling your data.

would love your feedback, thoughts and features to add. if you can share with other communities, it would be appreciated.

ps.
this is an after-hours project solely on my weird obsession of MIDI. i will try and answer questions as quick as i can.

stopping my unfinished midi loops from dying on my 25yr old hard drive

been making beats in my home studio since the early 2000s and my drive is literally just a graveyard of unfinished tracks and loops. i know in my heart im never gonna finish 90% of these tracks myself, so i built an open community site called notebin.fm

it’s basically if Pastebin and GitHub had a baby that only speaks MIDI.

you can drop a .mid file in, preview the piano roll in your browser, edit or even create them using online midi editor if you don’t own music setup yet. shout to ryohey 🇯🇵 & his open-source signal project with that feature. since i used to live in ableton & fl, I built a drag & drop feature that grab the MIDIs and/or their individual channels from your browser tab right into FL Studio, Ableton, Logic or whatever your DAW poison. I haven’t fully tested it so apologies if it doesn’t work as described.

not looking to make money off this at all. built it after work just to feed a void and get these ideas out into the world. there’s a ‘buy me a coffee link’ on there if you really want.

let me know if the drag-and-drop works on your setup or if anything breaks.

i am going to dust off some folders and browse through the unorganized chaos of “hiphop_98bpm_-dopeness_031_RV3.flp”. be patient as i upload. i promise that i will rename it to something better.
