What's the hype with cars and condos in tough times?

I see people with average dual-income usually in dilemma about getting cars or condos while they already fear career instability, unforgiving job market and uncertain economy. Isn't that a no-brainier to pass on these big risk? I don't get why people will seek more debt and a high chance of bankruptcy during difficult times.

Thank you r/singaporefi and Morgan Housel. Your general stance on world ETFs and diversification was right after all.

Before actively reading this sub, I was mostly single stock picker and pure-US etf investor. I always thought going all in on US stocks was the no-brainer because of the sheer momentum of tech and big cap companies.

Then last year, I stumbled upon this subreddit and also read "Psychology of Money" by Morgan Housel. I learned lots of concepts about diversification, tail events, overvaluations, rebalancing, geographic risks and most importantly sleeping well at night.

I don't invest in this sub-favorite's VWRA but I hold one US-etf and one ex US-etf to give US and the rest of the world 50-50 fair chance. I am obviously doing better than my previous portfolio due to the general economic boom across the whole world especially driven by AI, memory, healthcare, oil & gas and not to mention new rising winners from the non-US markets.

Thanks everyone!

======= Edit ========

My two ETFs are SPUS and SPWO.
Eventually migrating to IGDA, which is an LSE world ETF.

How likely is it for contract roles to be extended or converted at Gov/Finance companies?

I’m pondering in terms of tech roles. I’m a seasoned tech and have perm stable roles in my life so far with decent compensation but not in shiny industries/ brand names.
I came across gov/finance roles which look fancy and are using latest tech but mostly are contracted.

Any tips or experiences?
