Well today is my lucky day!

I previously posted about my kraakware punch bowl that I bought at auction. It was catalogued oniy as blue and white Chinese bowl.

After I picked it up I noticed it was etched and a little dull, and I wondered if it could be from the Hatcher cargo. I reached out to Christie’s twice - but no response. Also other “free appraisal” places - no response.

Finally found a local to me appraiser who forwarded photos to a former museum curator. He not only recognized the bowl, but found the exact lot and date from the -1984 auction. So OMG I HAVE A HATCHER CARGO PUNCH BOWL! I’m taking it to be appraised next. I’m so excited!

A recent acquisition - a likely shipwreck Zhangzhou klapmuts painted in the Kraak style.

In pretty amazing condition, too! Much more heavily potted than typical Kraak, and with the peach biscuit seen on the base and rim fritting. In my research I found a similar example in recovered from a Swatow Indonesia wreck, and that prior to the discovery of this wreck, there weren’t many encountered examples of Zhangzhou/swatow klapmuts copying the Kraak style. This one is a copy of a Rinaldi group 2 and there is even very similar example in her book, and mine even includes the “unusual” opposing ruyi heads.

So I’m glad to have this example. It will sit proudly with the rest of my klapmuts.

Anyone here knowledgeable in continental (probably French) faience? (USA)

Hi all,

I recently purchased this jug at auction. It was catalogued only as continental faience. I thought it resembled Nevers faience, of which I already have a few pieces. But in researching I haven’t been able to definitively determine where it is from - if France at all.

All I’ve been able to find is it is probably 18th century and the form is called a gargoulette, which was popular in Provence. But I haven’t been able to find any examples that employ the use of maganese like this one, or this decoration.

If anyone is knowledgeable, or can point me in the direction of an expert in can ask for guidance, I’d be grateful.

Thoughts on age and value

Hi all - this Heriz is coming up for auction at a local auction house and I am considering bidding. It’s catalogued as 1930s Heriz. It looks to be in excellent condition.

Would you agree it’s 1930s and what would a reasonable auction price be? The bidding starts at 3K and they have it valued 3500-5000. It’s 8.1 x 10.8.

Thank you so much for any insights.

I just picked up this 14” punch bowl. The auction house just had it listed as “blue and white Chinese bowl” but I recognized it as Kraak immediately. Photos indicated rim fritting, brushwork and color of late Ming/transitional pieces, and it has clear chatter marks on the footrim. ChatGPT saw what I saw. But the kicker was the identical bowl is shown as part of the Hatcher cargo in Maura Rinaldi’s book - same size, shape, rim, and literally the exact same alternating panels and center motif - down to the bird that looks like it’s butt got cut off. I had to double check it wasn’t literally the exact bowl! (Last photo)

So at least this bowl seems to be contemporary to that. Kind of cool how identical they are. I like to imagine the same artist painted them. Others must have agreed about the age despite the catalog listing because there were several of us bidding and the price went to the top of my comfort zone lol.

I am wondering if it could actually be from the Hatcher Cargo, as the finish is dull and the white does seem a tad stained in the bottom? It has no stickers from the auction and the provenance was just from a “palm beach collection” - I don’t really care if it is or not, I love it all the same. 😍
